• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A study in Early American furniture

A long time ago I went on holiday to New England and of course went to see some Shaker villages. I also stumbled upon Historic Deerfield and my view of furniture has been heavily influenced by the pieces on display. I had an opportunity to make three occasional tables and so decided to...

    Photos again

I am struggling to upload photos. I use Mac and iPad and would love to upload a whole load of photos but it is a massive faff and I give up in frustration. It is the usual Mac problem of the photos rotating themselves and there being no easy fix. So how do I do it easily and faff free please?

    Indexing Question

I have an index head on my lathe with 1 to 24 stops. Can one of you turning experts explain the logic. For example if I want to create 3 flat surfaces 120 degrees apart is that 1, 8 and 16 pr 1, 9, 17 or some other. I tried drawing a parallel line to my lathe bed on a disc. I was hoping to see...

    Dining Suite

In 1997 I bought some American Black Walnut to make a 9’ dining table, chairs and sideboard. I think the wood has sufficiently dried for me to start. (I made the sideboard 20 years ago). I have planed up the table top wood and will start gluing up next week. It is all 1.1m long by 250-330 wide...

    Polycril

Has anyone used Polycril or similar to stabilise wood. I have some catspaw oak and want to shape it. Do I just go very slowly 0.5mm at a time or would Polycril applied to the catspaws help?

    Talking of medieval carving

My house is C17 but there are some panels that are far older. How they came to be in my house is a mystery. They were probably recycled from some Manor House. The carvings are basic but the carver must have had quite a collection of tools. If any has the auger bit for the circular carvings I...

    Floating floor

I have a floating floor to lay in my Dining room. Most suppliers and insulation manufacturers specify a layer of foil faced insulation a moisture control layer (vapour control layer) then the engineered oak floor. I am struggling to see what the moisture control layer does. If the insulation is...

    Stuck lock

I have got an old fashioned mortice lock which has a roller rather than wedge shaped latch. It has jammed! In the lock plate of course. I have tried removing the handle and manually turning the Tommy bar. It is solid. I have also tried to get a thin strip of metal between the plate and latch to...
