Hello from South West Scotland

Postby Sulturner » 02 Jan 2019, 03:22

Hi all been turning and carving for about 9 months and am mostly self taught (I say mostly because YouTube has helped). Left my career in sales for health reasons and now spend whatever time I can in the workshop. Looking forward to having a read through the forum and chatting to you all.
Bryce

Couple of examples of what I have been up to so far. ImageImage

Hi Dave

Yep absolutely stunning blank that's why I kept the profile quite plain wanted the wood to do the talking. Here's a closer look for you.

Hi Malc and thanks for the welcome. Yeh I have a large separate garage that I can fit all of my stuff in lots of it hobbyist size though. I have two lathes a Sealey which was limiting me so recently upgraded to a record power dml36sh-cam. There is enough room for that two benches length ways against each other and a wood drying curing area about 10 foot by 5. I'll get some pictures up when I have cleared up a bit lol

Wow! Many of us join the forum because we have no workshop, and look to learn how to build one. You're on a flying start!

It factored quite high up the priorities list when we were looking to move house. Had to get it re roofed and have electricity run into it but all well worth it

Welcome Sulturner. Good to have you here.

I'm a non-turner. I think you should be too.............

Let me explain. Any time you spend spinning sawdust off round bits of wood is time you aren't carving. You're turning looks OK to me, but your carving.............oh boy! You have some serious talent. If you take my advice, you'd flog your lathes, buy a whole lot of interesting wood with the proceeds (plus a few extra carving tools), and then fill this forum with examples of your carving work. Fantastic stuff!

Mike thanks for your kind words I have been carving for probably about 6 years I also paint but the turning I use as a type of therapy (I had a heart attack a couple of years ago and have had some mental health issues as a result) the carving is for the summer months though when I can sit out the back in the sun and chip away. I appreciate your feedback on the turning and to be OK is great as it means there is loads of room to learn and improve. That said I'll try and get some more carvings done. The stick is up on Etsy at the moment but no takers so far.

Not wood related unless you count the frame but this is what else keeps me busy along with a wip carving. The carving is actually an old piece of fence post from the neighbouring farm. We got a load to burn but I started to whittle away and thought I'd see it through. Also made a pen and a little presentation box which looks poorly finished but it's actually designed to look like aged church pues as it was for a minister. The last picture is a view from my back garden where I sit and carve. Again thanks for your kind words and feedback.
