Hello from Lancashire

Postby jamieD » 20 Mar 2017, 21:43

Hello everyone , I'm a half irish/Manchester yorkshireman living in Lancashire! 43 years old with 4 wonderful children.
Parents were antique dealers which started my relationship with wood. I ran a business for many years making rustic furniture and kitchens. Times changed and I left woodworking for a period and earnt a living being a b&q manager! AAAaarrgh! never again I have now spent the last ten years as a kitchen installer whilst also making the odd made to measure piece.
When we moved into our house the garden was a very steep slope which Caroline (she who must be obeyed) wanted to level, so my workshop was dug into the hillside with the garden on top, I'm extremely lucky to have a space of 3 single garages at home with no rent or rates.
I use it to make furniture for home, family ,my own kitchen and occasional orders. Caroline says I use it to tinker and avoid childrens dance lessons!
I dabble with a bit of turning and carving, and I get a lot of enjoyment using reclaimed items . I would like to use to use the forum to discuss woodwork tips and news, my wife just did not get excited when I talked about Powermatic being sold at Axminster stores!

Ahhh, another Northern lad, welcome! This place is, and has for too long been overrun by Southerners, we need a little more Northern grit! ;)

Whereabout you living Jamie? I am a Manc lad now living just outside now in Grappenhall, just outside Warrington.

Cheers

Welcome Jamie,
Your workshop sounds interesting. I don't think we have one that has been "dug into the hillside with the garden on top" before. Can't wait to see photos of that and and past or current projects.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

I moved down south from Yorkshire in 1967 and had to change how I spoke to be understood especially as I worked in a castle.
Cassell soon became Carrsell and nobody knew a buffet was a stool
Even after 50 yrs I've still got a bit of a accent as people ask where I came from.
