Greetings from Newcastle

Postby dusty » 21 Mar 2017, 10:25

Hello all,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.
As per this post title, I'm based up in Newcastle upon Tyne, but am from the Black Country originally - my host city treats me well though, and I've called the North East home for 11 years now.

A little about me - I'm a sculptor by trade, but as you may imagine, working in the arts doesn't exactly result in a steady income, so I make little bits of furniture on the side to keep the cash coming in. Anything from kitchen units and built in furniture to coffee tables and museum furniture - plinths, projector cradles etc.

I'm about to move into a new workshop (or studio as I call it) which will be a less than typical set-up. I'm part of an artists group who utilise disused or due-for-demolition-at-some-point office blocks and turn them into artists studios and gallery spaces. Completely legally, I hasten to add.
We've been in our current premises for 6 years - having been told we could have it for 1 - but it is finally being demolished, so we're moving into our new place on a two-year lease.

I'll take some photos for all of you as I move in over the next couple of weeks, but I'm really excited about having Ground Floor access! for the last 6 years I've been on the second floor, which is great for security, but rubbish for carrying 24mm Birch ply sheets or a Meddings pillar drill for that matter. Needless to say I don't have a table saw

I feel like I'm waffling, so I'll stop now, but I'm looking forward to being part of what looks like a supportive, informative and fun community.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave, and welcome aboard. We are attracting a lot of northerners at the moment. :D

You will need 3 posts before you can start posting images.

Sculptor sounds like you work in stone or clay perhaps?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers
Andy

Sorry for the rather tardy reply chaps, and thank you for all the welcomes.

It's been a busy week packing up and moving my workshop but I managed the bulk of it today, took three transit van loads... and I thought I'd managed to pare back on offcuts and will-be-useful-someday items!

In reply to Andy, sculptor is perhaps a loose term - I do work with clay sometimes, but often to make molds to cast in resin or porcelain or something similar. I incorporate some woodwork into my sculptures, but have done very little carving.
I tend to collaborate with other people on projects to explore different subjects from an artistic angle. In the past I have worked with neuroscientists, industrial robotics engineers and bakers - so every project is different!

Once I'm allowed to post photos I'll try and put up some shots of the new workshop space.

With 3 posts under your belt you will be able to post Urls that link to your pictures.

There is a tutorial in the tips section giving the gist of using photo hosting sites to store your pictures if this is new to you.
