Hello from Hungary

Postby Rezi » 08 Dec 2018, 11:53

Hi Everyone,

I have just joined this forum without any previous lurking but I have been a member on UKworkshop for about a year. I recognise some names on here from there but I only occasionally comment.

I'm fairly new to woodworking, turning mostly, but I intend to expand my hobby into making other small items and eventually, furniture. My woodworking is a hobby and not commercial in any way.

I have recently retired, sold up and moved to Hungary (my wife is Hungarian) and I'm in the process of having our house renovated. That is due to be finished in about a month and I will, after a long hiatus of 5 months, be able to get my workshop functioning again in a new space. One of my first posts will be asking for advice about the best set up for this. So, looking forward to some constructive advice.

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forum.
What lathe have you got, or are you getting a new one? I bought my JET with the lump sum when my pension started, it is a big upgrade on the second hand Axminster one I started with.
Regards,
Dave
My tool kit is almost complete, only a few more to get.

Welcome Steve,

Ask away and we will try and help.

We like pictures both of what you have done and to illustrate questions too.

Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to learning and contributing.

I've just about got the sketch up drawing of the space I have for my workshop finished which I'll start a thread on tomorrow. It's a large(ish) but an unusual shaped space and it'll be good to get some input on it's best use.

DaveL - short story long but in a year of turning (inc the enforced 5month hiatus) I'm on my 3rd lathe! I bought a Record Power CL4 on Ebay which was perfectly good but the guy I bought it off was selling all of his workshop equipment and I ended up buying everything he had and selling all the stuff I didn't want. I ended up with a smaller RP lathe as well. All of his tools and equipment were about 9/10 years old but still virtually mint. Anyway, when I decided to move to Hungary I found out that woodworking machinery is prohibitively expensive and very hard to find as people are generally too poor to spend so much on a hobby and that means no outlets selling it so I decided to upgrade to the Axminster AW1628VS before I set off. I've only had a few weeks of using it prior to moving but it was fantastic in comparison.

Welcome Steve.
Whereabouts in Hungary are you? I remember very well a trip I made there in the 80s. Pike-Perch and Tokaji on the shore of Lake Balaton live long in my memory.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Thanks for the welcome.

AndyP - I live near a village called Rezi (my login name) which is located at the western end of Lake Balaton. Fishing is very popular here particularly for Pike, Perch and enormous Catfish - I've seen one caught that was about 5ft long!

I thought I would revive this thread as I have posted very little in the nearly 2 years since I joined.

I am also a refugee from the 'dim' side and I feel I need to explore a little more to hopefully find a forum where the members are not so easliy distracted by non-workshop subjects.

I'm near the end of my current project which is a large Pergola and, although I haven't taken many WIP pictures, I'll post it when it is complete in a couple of weeks (or so). Once that is done I intend to get to know my lathe a little better and test the segmented turning waters.
