New recruit from Finland

Postby heimlaga » 19 Sep 2020, 17:29

Hello
RogerS recruited me for this forum.

I am part carpenter par joiner by trade. Have done quite a bit of restoration work. Currently working on a new wind shaft for a windmill.

I share the workshop with another part timer. He supplies the space and I supply the machinery. The machines are elderly cast iron in the larger variety. I have rebuilt most of them. Everything from nickel welding cast iron to rewinding a burned out motor to scraping worn cast iron parts to fit. Most of my hand tools are old too. I have even forged a few myself.

My hobby woodworking projects are often made from timber I harvest in our own woodland or windfallen trees I get pretty much for free from others. My metalwork is usually based on materials found at the scrap yard.

In short I fit the description "jack of all trades master of none". With emphasis on the second half. Master of none.

Yes....by the way.... I am belong to the Swedish minority that has lived in Finland since prehistoric times. Therefore should I insult someone it may just be a translation mistake from Swedish to English.

Hello and welcome. I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name.

I have recently had an Ancestry DNA test done and it says I'm 5% Norwegian and 5% Swedish. We could be related!! :)

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

I like old cast iron machines, I have a Wadkin table saw and a Multico planer. We like pictures, I would like pictures of your old iron!
Regards,
Dave

There seem to be a few more refugees around here as of late :eusa-think:

I might spend more time here, to be honest.

Welcome from me too. Your English is perfect and it sounds like you lead an interesting life.

I was born in Yorkshire the home for the Vikings for many years. I probably have some of your genes .

And a warm welcome fro NW France.

I hope you take plenty of photos of your work. I am sure many of us here would be very interested in what you do. My own brief foray into harvesting my own timber and creating something useful was probably the most satisfying thing I have ever done.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Welcome indeed heimlaga! I've appreciated your honest, sensible appreciation of how difficult it can be to get machines up in your part of the world, and how resourceful you personally have been at getting the job done with what you have, not what you covet!!

Hope you enjoy your time here, I would start by 'blocking' that 9fingers chap.... :eusa-whistle:

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Seems like a place where it is worth staying.

Some of you who haven't seen my machines before were interested the here are a few:

bandsåg.JPG
(134.53 KiB)

24" band saw. Manufactured by E.V.Beronius Mekaniska Verkstad in Eskilstuna Sweden. Likely in the 1910-s. Retrofitted with electric motor and modern guards and new ball bearing guides. Almost everything made from scrap yard materials.

fräsbord.JPG
(142.27 KiB)

Router table. Home made using cast iron table and spindle mount from an early 20th century wood framed spindle moulder. The hole in the table was too small to fit modern spindle moulder tooling so it was outdated as spindle moulder and the wooden frame and fence were gone so it wasn't a museum piece either. So I made something useful out of it. The motor is a 1800w Suchner which I bought new. The rest is scrap yard materials.

More pictures later

So does the biscuit tin have any biscuits in it or is it like the ones in my shop, full of assorted odds and ends?

The band saw does look very useful how deep can you resaw with it?

Dave
