Hello!

Postby sidtsloth » 25 Jan 2015, 13:24

Hi all,

Just thought I'd do the polite thing and introduce myself before asking lots of questions.

I am very much not geared up for professional woodwork, but I have been doing my best with the gear / space I have.

So far I have learned that if you start with oak, then its expensive, and a steep learning curve.

I shall try to get a couple of pics of the couple of bits I have made, im pleased enough with them for the level of machines I have access to. The main one was an enlarged version of a cheap Ikea swing front shoe unit - dismantled, copied, extended and rebuild to fit the space in oak.

Next I'd like to build a wine rack/unit, again needs to be oak to match, so the learning curve will continue.

Richard.

Welcome Richard,

We like nothing more than WIP photos and being able to offer help when requested.

Bob,

You might regret that, I live in Totton and work in Hursley, so close enough to ask far too many questions. :D

(I shall try very hard not to).

Welcome Richard.

Some of the first things I ever made were in oak, reclaimed and very hard.
Not many of us here are professional woodworkers and those that are very welcoming and will help and advise freely.

Looking forward to seeing your work.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers
Andy

Feel Free Richard.
I'm very much a wood machinist rather than a hand tool wielder which comes from my engineering background.
My specialist subject is induction motors so more than happy to help out with motor problems - even "spawn of the devil" brush motors under duress.

Do you work at the Institute of Broken Marriages in Hursley by any chance?

Cheers

Hi Richard,
I did wonder but there might have been one or two other places tucked away.
The only other chap I know who is/was up there is Dave Sawdon
I worked at Roke Manor for 33+ years until I escaped in 2009 to concentrate on making sawdust, swarf and solder blobs. Best job I've had yet!

The only other places I know of are the pubs, the garage, the butchers and the post office :)

I have seen lots of talk about Roke recently (I am in the process of looking for another job).

It looks like a good place to be able to get your hands dirty with a lot of different technical stuff. I still might send them a CV later this week and see if anything on there sparks an interest. But before I do that I should probably find a way to add in a throw away comment about my tinkering with silly toy cars, arduino's, node red and other internetty stuff, and an attempt to build a CNC router.

If you want to chat by PM about Roke feel free. However I am just about to go out so will reply later.
