Sourcing Birdseye Maple

Postby RogerM » 21 Sep 2017, 11:04

I'm trying to find some nice Birdseye Maple from which I can cut some 3mm veneers up to 60cms long for a star burst table. I normally get stuff from Yandles, but they have had nothing suitable for ages, so I'm casting the net further afield. I regularly do the trip up the A303 from Plymouth to Haslemere, so really any decent stockists along the south coast between Devon and West Sussex might suit.

I want to be able to treat the finished table as though it was in solid, hence the requirement to cut my own veneers rather than buy in wafer thin commercial veneer. Anyone got any suggestions for timber merchants that they would recommend I contact?

I thought at one time we had a list of suppliers nationally as an online resource? Or was that WH1? If not, then perhaps we need one?

W L West at Petworth maybe worth a try?

Funningly enough I bought some from Yandles a few years back though not very wide lengths.

Thanks Rod. I'll give them a try. I got a glorious short board of Birdseye Maple from Yandles about 3 years ago, hiding behind some sycamore. My guess is that someone hid it there meaning to come back later and I found it by accident. Sadly, it's not enough for my project. The staff there say that it's just a lottery as to what comes in. They don't specifically stock it, but sometimes there is a nicely figured board in amongst the standard maple.

You might have to go further afield.

Timberline are likely to have some

If you're coming up the A303, you're always welcome to stop for a brew, no need to stand on ceremony :D - Rob

I know Jonny D was impressed with Reliance Veneer in London, he’s just had a load of Santos rosewood veneer from them he said their prices were very good.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. If I can't find what I want there then there may be a change of plan. Pippy Oak maybe? I also see Crispins do constructional veneers of 2.5mm to 2.8mm that might suit.

Yandles always have a reasonable selection of pippy oak which I seem to recollect they call 'country' oak, usually in boards about 25mm thick so good for bandsawing veneers - Rob

I was at Surrey Timbers today and they had some birds eye maple available. One or two nice boards with plenty of "eyes" and others nearly blind and to me, more like mildly quilted.

Some of their boards are shown online but a lot more in the warehouse - worth a visit.
