Wattle fence panel

Postby Andyp » 04 Apr 2016, 16:52

Spent an enjoyable couple of hours this afternoon with eldest daughter making a replacement wattle fence panel. I had to drill a few holes on the railway sleepers that surround the terrain boule to hold it in place.
Mixture of popular (or poplar) and apple.

Will have to make a few more soon.

Always satisfying to make something like this and should last about 3-4 years or long enough for the popular to sprout sufficient shoots to make a new one.

Nice, Andy..........although until you fix it at the edges I hope the wind doesn't get up!

Nice auto-correct on whatever you're typing on......."popular" :)

Thanks Mike, in the in-situ shot the panel has been turned upside down so each upright is about 3" in the ground. The top corners are held with a loop of garden wire. Very sheltered in that corner so wind not too much of a problem.

Sorry about the popular poplar.

Did the material come from your own trees, Andy?

I have about a dozen apple and pear trees, Roger. One of the apple trees didn't get pruned last year so the growth was longer than usual. The poplar is actually on my neighbours side of the fence. It was cut down to about 6ft a few years ago but of course this throws up new growth which he is more than happy for me to prune.

Very nice Andy, one comment, when I was being shown how to make these, the drilled holes in the base template were in a slight curve so that the staves are driven in an arc then the lathes (?) woven in place. When you remove the panel and straighten it up it tightens the whole panel up before driving the sharpened ends of the staves into the ground.

Thanks Ian, great tip. It never occurred to me to look up how it should be done. I will try and remember that for next time. I'll have a google and see how big the arc should be.
