B.
I can see why you've tried A but the panes are too small.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

"B" looks good, but as Andy said the panes on "A" are a bit too small and it makes the window look a bit "fussy" compared to others if that makes sense?

I thought this was a trick spot the difference competition for a minute!

This is why windows should be designed before the openings! Neither are right in my view. I would ideally try to have the vertical: horizontal ratio of the panes about 1.5/ 1.6:1. (For aficionados of classical maths, there's the Golden Section for you). Certainly, panes should never be wider than they are tall. Just for the sake of the discussion, I'll go with A.

Mmmm..interesting, thanks, chaps.

I measured the window in A and it's very close to Mike's ideal ratio but I still don't think it looks right in respect to the other windows. So I think it will be B - which is what is there at the moment.

I've just noticed that the two outer sash windows on the upper floor are 1/3rd 2/3rd. Can't say that I have seen them like that before. Is it unusual or just me not noticing such things?

It's not unusual at all. Now mentally draw the dividing line half way down the window opening, rather than a third of the way down, and immediately all the panes become wider than they are tall, which is one of the architectural world's X Deadly Sins.

Go with A...

...if you want people to think you bought that window second hand from the local prison. Otherwise B, where the panes remain taller than they are wide to my eye.

Hi RogerS

Its all down to personal choice, but think of the cleaning element, it looks a murderess occupation.

If it was me and cost no option I would go for a refit.
