Cool Wood Stuff from my trip

Postby kirkpoore1 » 28 May 2016, 15:08

Now that I'm back, I've started going through the pictures I took while visiting you all. I'm going to post the ones that I find to be interesting from a woodworking perspective, particularly those that have design features or decorative elements that could be useful. I'll start off with items from the Victoria & Albert museum:

First off, some real kick-ass-and-take-names woodcarving. I think this was the top of a tryptich, and is about 6 inches deep (front to back):

I only wish I could do carving that was as light and delicate.

Here is more, with amazing detail:
Image

A little shakey, but this is a simple enough piece that it could be used for a narrow panel where necessary:

Similar piece, with extant paint and gilding:

Lectern with complex carving:

Slightly blurred closeup of a pierced panel:

Carved boss from a ceiling. I think this thing was 8-10" on a side, and 3-4" thick. Big carvings are easier than little ones.

Trefoil with rose. Something I'll probably use later.

Interesting pierced arcading on a six board chest.

Not as fashionable these days, but painted woodwork can still look good:

And who says chests have to have straight sides?

OK, that's all for the moment. More later.

While you were here and I was away I visited a few National Trust properties and came away with a few furniture pictures. I think those that have tried making things out of wood have a different view of what they are looking at. I'm marvelling at the inlay on a small table or something for a minute or two and everyone else has just walked past. Maybe I should post them..

Hard getting blur free pictures in places where they keep the light low for conservation reasons.

More stuff from the V&A:

Marquetry example. I don't recall the details, but I think it was 16th century.

Panel frame casket. 15th century I think.

Folding chair, 16th century. The back lifts off on this one before it folds. I have seen some where the back is pinned to one arm and pivots up to let the chair fold. This one had an interesting repeating chevron-like pattern on the tops of the arms.

This table was interesting from several perspectives. Terry and I spent some time going over it. It had some features which were designed to hide mortises and tenons. One of the decorative posts which join the bottom rail with the upper rail had been seriously damaged but the repair was expertly done and very hard to spot.

Another feature was a very early example of a breadboard end on a table top:

Nice box chair:

Now, this was a big carving--maybe 7' tall?

Wooden spiral staircase:

Who needs balusters when you can have linenfold panels?

More later...
