Now that I'm back, I've started going through the pictures I took while visiting you all. I'm going to post the ones that I find to be interesting from a woodworking perspective, particularly those that have design features or decorative elements that could be useful. I'll start off with items from the Victoria & Albert museum:
First off, some real kick-ass-and-take-names woodcarving. I think this was the top of a tryptich, and is about 6 inches deep (front to back):
I only wish I could do carving that was as light and delicate.
Here is more, with amazing detail:
A little shakey, but this is a simple enough piece that it could be used for a narrow panel where necessary:
Similar piece, with extant paint and gilding:
Lectern with complex carving:
Slightly blurred closeup of a pierced panel:
Carved boss from a ceiling. I think this thing was 8-10" on a side, and 3-4" thick. Big carvings are easier than little ones.
Trefoil with rose. Something I'll probably use later.
Interesting pierced arcading on a six board chest.
Not as fashionable these days, but painted woodwork can still look good:
And who says chests have to have straight sides?
OK, that's all for the moment. More later.
