How do you .......

Postby 9fingers » 26 Jul 2016, 17:08

.....extend the angle capability of a mitre chopsaw?

In vertical cutting mode my saw like most I guess can be adjusted +/-45 about 90 degree cut but every now and then I need greater angles.
Usually I use the saw to cut a block at 45 degrees and place that against the back fence and the workpiece against the block, then set the blade for the required angle -45 degrees.

It works pretty well but I could do with more hands and every now and then something slips and mistakes get made. There is no obvious way to clamp the offset block to the saw so I can concentrate on just holding the workpiece.

I did thing of a complete clip in dummy fence with angle offset but as my saw is a simple chop saw not a slider, a whole width fence will soon get cut in half.

How do you do this and is there a better way than mine?

TIA

Bob

Same issue really. TS mitre gauge is +/- 45 degrees as well.
But this time the mitre gauge, offset block and workpiece has to move. At least with the mitresaw everything can stay still and just the blade moved with my third hand.

This time it is 65 x 22 section and 30 & 60 to the long axis.

But my question was more about bright ideas for a generic solution....

Either I don't understand the question or I am going to embarrass myself here (most likely!), but if you want, say 50 degrees, set the saw to 40 then you get 50 on the other side of the blade :eusa-think: :eusa-pray:

In your case you would set the saw to 30.

I make up little forms and clamp them against/along the saw's back fence.

Jobs a gooden!

I was trying to picture in my head why you can't use the miter slot (not the gauge) .. make up a norm type panel cutter, but at whatever angle you want .. or adjustable ?

or a similar jig that could be used with the fence ?

I know what I mean ! lol .. do you ?

By Jove! someone is reading the question!

Yes that is basically what I'm doing Paul apart from the rear of my mitre saw fence has a very uneven surface and not easy to clamp to as the "form" is hand held too.

In those instances Bob I head to my radial arm saw instead of the SCMS, because I have an accurate right angle triangle cut out of ply which I screw to the wooden bench, giving me either 45 degrees or 90 degrees to work from. As you say, this is relatively difficult with a SCMS because fixing anything in place is awkward. Maybe grit your teeth and drill a couple of holes through the table, and use these to locate pegs or machine screws to hold such a piece in place.

Yes, mine does too, but I also have homemade beds each side of the saw for long pieces of timber. These fences are made of maple off-cuts and it's these fences I clamp forms & stops to.

Dewalt used to make angled fences to use with a radial arm saw. I picked up a pair of these that were 'remaindered' on the 'bay by Miles Tools a few years ago and they would probably do what you want.

I haven't seen any around for a while so maybe you could make your own - all you'd need would be the skills and a metalworking workshop :D

If you want i can photograph the ones I've got and take measurements.

Hi Jeff, I'm guess this is possibly the special mitre accessory referred to on page 85 of the DW powershop manual. (a copy of which is in the WH2 dropbox)

The illustration is none too clear so a photo or two would be helpful. Don't worry about the dimensioning as if a were to make such a device, I'd probably design it around my chop saw.

Thanks in advance

Rough cut with band or jig saw, then a shooting board with angled insert. Nicer finish too - but it hasnt got a lead.....

Exactly David - so it is a non starter in my book
No shooting board straight or angled or indeed no shooting plane

In this instance the angled cuts are mating faces of cope and stick joints so after sawing they will be profiled on the router table.

I think I understand your suggested approach but my point was that I'd asked about mitre chopsaw methods.

In slow time I'm building a sliding table for my TS and that will have an adjustable angle fence and suitable for this sort of job.

Cheers

fair enough ..
I haven't use my chop saw for many years .. brushed motor noise and space .
Even more space if you want to do more than 45 !

I nearly always have a sled on me TS, or the miter slot "panel cutter"
You can even do it by eye ! ...

more later .. if not for you, then for anyone else watching this thread :-)

BTW .. I spell Miter .. even though EU says Mitre ! .. what does everyone else say ?

Mitre every time. Anything else is wrong and belongs on the left hand side of the pond
Switch your spill chucker to UK English as I have and it rejects "miter"

No problem Bob, I'll sort out the info today. You're right about the reference on page 85 of the powershop manual though the diagram there coud not really be called detailed!.
