Cupboard hinge positioning

Postby 9fingers » 08 Sep 2016, 21:45

I have to fit a couple of small cupboard doors each with a pair of 50mm butts tomorrow

The doors are small shaker style panel type 295mm high and 193 wide. Are there any conventions on where to fit the hinges.
Gut feel says keep it symmetrical with one about 50mm up from the bottom and the other 50mm down from the top.

Any thoughts?

Whatever looks right - I always hold them up and see how they look.

I've just watched a wood whisperer video on the subject and he suggests lining up the end of the hinge with a line projected from the rail.

Seems plausible?

For my door this will be 42 mm and leave 111mm between the hinges.

Are the doors lead-lined, Bob? ;)

I think 50mm are way to large and out of proportion to the size of the door. But it is early and my brain's not woken up totally.

I typically use the hinge as a measure. I'll put the top of the top hinge, and the bottom of the bottom hinge, one hinge height down and up respectively, from the top & bottom, respectively, of the door. Sometimes, on a really small door, instead of using the underside of a hinge at the top of the door as my mark I'll bradawl the centre of its lower hole, and use that us the upper screw position, and of course, vice versa with the bottom one.

That's fairly impenetrable, reading it back. Have fun with that Bob.

I think I got that at first read Mike. I'll offer up both methods and the Wood Whisperer one and see how they look to the artistic director. I've not made the doors yet but want to chop out the rebates in the carcase before I assemble that. I can mark off the doors when they get made later.
I'm just fitting in what tasks I can before I'm hauled away from the workshop on holiday next Tuesday.

@Roger. I looked at 38mm hinges and they seemed so twee that I ordered 50mm ones. I tend to go for a well engineered solution with plenty of margin

Thanks for everyone's input.

You must tell your children to stop swinging on the doors then! The hinges on my cupboard doors are 25mm...

Hmm! My "child" of 29 and 6'4" thankfully has stopped swinging on doors and mercifully we are grandchild free so far!

Everyone to their own naturally but to me 25mm hinges suit novelty/jewellery type boxes rather than cupboards.

I'm with Wood Whisperer Bob, hinges line up with shoulder on the rails.

For a door of that size, I would have used a straight run piano hinge from top to bottom.

Just the job! ;)

Thinking about it I did just that many years ago on a project. however I have already purchased the 50mm hinges.

After offering up the various options, I ended up with the upper/lower end of the hinges level with the door rails.

The doors have yet to be made so this is a mock up with offcuts of the correct section.

As you say, Bob, it's all personal preference but for me those hinges are massive :)
