What wood ?

Postby RogerS » 14 Oct 2016, 12:49

Been having a tidy up and came across these two widely differing planks which I can't work out what they are. Bought at Pugh's and without any provenance.

First up is this one (A) ..fairly straight grained but possesses none of the open pores that you'd expect from oak. Neither does it smell of oak when you work it.

Next is B...thought it might be ash but, again, has none of the characteristic ash smell when it's worked

Any suggestions ?

I can't see any of the medullary rays you'd expect with oak.

How about chestnut?

how heavy are they compared to oak?

And they look like ash to me too based on the one plank I've ever had of it. It was significantly lighter than oak in weight.

They are definitely different as the relative weights are dissimilar - B being lighter than A.

Malcolm...were you referring to A or B ?

Looks a lot darker than the ash I'm working with lately but I think mine is American White ash and yours could be English ash maybe.

Thing is that neither of them smell like ash when they're being cut etc.

Looks to me like both are American red oak. Too pinkish in color for white oak, at least the white oak I see around here. Does it have open pores? Probably not American ash--the contrast between grain types is too high, at least compared to the samples I just looked at in my shed. The red oak in my shed looked just like them, though.

I'm with Kirk on this one - American red oak I reckons.

If it looks like oak, but doesn't have the rays, then chestnut would be the favourite. However, just to be awkward, I'd say the first looks like chestnut and the second like ash!

The rays are normally only visible on quarter sawn and Roger's timber looks like it's through sawn.

without reading .. A looked like oak to me .. 1st impression

and after reading .. I've not noticed that Ash has a distinctive smell , like oak does ?

working with reclaimed boards .. red oak doesn't have the smell so much of english/euro
and less of the rays

Yes, both pieces look flat sawn, though the wider one may have some near-quarter sawn sections toward the outer edges. You can also handplane the edges and they might be visible.

You can actually blow bubbles through short pieces of red oak, like 3-4" long.

Idiot. What do you know about anything? Sheesh...... The first one might well be chestnut, but the second is almost certainly red oak.

Mike,
Talking to yourself is all well and good (and the best of us do it!) but doing it in a public forum ???
I'm beginning to worry that all this working on your own is starting to take it toll on you mate!

Roger, do you think you can send a sample away for DNA analysis for testing and maybe anyone who guessed correctly could have first dibs.
