Rockler

Postby Phil » 27 Oct 2016, 16:12

I have purchased from Rockler a couple of times, but it always had to be delivered locally, USofA, and I then had to wait till someone went over on holiday or business and brought it back.

Today one of the woody e-mails arrived and I clicked on Rockler to see what they had.

BANG!

Up pops a window "We can now deliver to RSA, we will quote item and delivery all in your local currency, payment by credit card" (when purchasing previously I had paid by Mastercard, no problems)

At current XRate, not a good idea at the moment.

They do have such a good selection ......................

I do so agree with you Phil.
In fact only this morning I tried dropping a hint that Axi might do well to act as a uk distributor but it seemed stony ground.

Yes I was doing some research trying to find the cost of a Deck Chair Brass fittings kit I have and noticed the tiny Union Flag and the words that they ship to the UK.
In the past I've preordered and picked up their stuff on visits to the States.
I've never been inside their shops but imagine they are pretty much like Lee Valley (Veritas) ones - Aladdin Caves of tooly delights.

Yes and no. Lee Valley has a much larger inventory, but that's because they do gardening stuff too. LV is mostly a catalog company. For the most part, their stores are attached to warehouses. They have one of everything out where you can see it, then you write down the item number, take it to a desk, and the counterman pulls the stuff you want off the warehouse shelf.

Although Rockler is also a mail order operation, their retail stores are just that--lots of stocked shelves and you pick what you want and take it to the checkout counter to pay. As a consequence, they won't have the variety that LV does since they simply don't have the space.

Rockler seems to winning their war on the WW gadget front with their arch rival Woodcraft. They've come up with a lot of new stuff in the last few years. Woodcraft has less variety in many areas but perhaps an advantage in quality, and devotes more floor space to machines. At least, since there is one of each in town, that's my impression from seeing both. The local Rockler is definitely better than the local Woodcraft on dust collector or shop vac fittings, while the local Woodcraft leads in varieties of finishes.:)

Looking at the their online catalogue the prices are in ZAR, and certainly not cheap.

Our local places are:-
Chamberlains - family owned, excellent service and have just about everything I need.

Gelmar - into hinges, handles etc. Nice selection and prices OK.

Builderswarehouse & Makro - part of Walmart group. Not cheap, fair selection. Service absolutely pathetic!
They actually dont deserve tobe in business.

Then a few smaller places like Mica.

Certainly nothing like the selection available from Rockler or LV.

I fear the ever worsening £ vs $ exchange rate may mean that even if we did go to the US, which my kids are desperate to do, things may not look as attractive anymore.

Yes, but I had to drive to Toronto (about 800 miles) to see the Lee Valley. :)

The pound may be down, but I bet a lot of stuff is still cheaper here. When I was there in the spring, the prices seemed similar to dollar prices, i.e. things were a lot more expensive in England. Well, not the beer (1), or the admissions to museums. But other stuff...
