American Black M£ga buck$

Postby Jimmy Mack » 17 Jan 2017, 20:36

About four years ago I was paying £55 + VAT per CU/ft for Walnut...then it was in the £60's

Today I was quoted (2"):

£87 +VAT

&

£112 +VAT

 :o  :o

I'd heard from a mate that the price had rocketed Jimmy, last time I fetched some it was from Sommerscales near Grimsby it was £45 a cubic foot for 1" sawn, wish I'd bought a van full :(

Totally bonkers price. :eusa-doh:

About to veneer up a desk top in 2.5mm constructional (ABW) veneer, the desk legs are solid, but for a moment I did consider veneering the WHOLE caboodle!

You can blame Brexit for starters.

You can also blame the Chinese middle classes who have developed a penchant for decent furniture made from real wood. Zebrano went up 4x in two years.

Nope.

Almost all of it is down to widespread Thousand Cankers.

Nope.

Widespread Thousand Cankers.

The Chinese are more interested in Rosewood exotics than US domestics.

Hi bodgers and welcome to the forum.
How did you find us? Are you a fellow woodworker? If you have a moment why not tell us a bit about yourself in our Welcome board.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I don't think this fungus is a major problem yet. It hasn't appeared inhe eatern US except in a very few places. The western states don't have that many walnuts used for lumber. The price has spiked here too, but it seems to be a demand issue.
