MDF frame around velux window reveal

Postby Andyp » 24 Jan 2017, 10:59

We have just had a Velux window installed

Image

I need to make good where the paper has been torn and plasterboard screw are visible.
Stripping the whole wall (sloping ceiling) is not really what I want to do. The wallpaper is in good nick and I doubt I could fine any more.
The inside of the reveal will be painted and screws holes filled.

In order to cover up the torn paper and plasterboard screws I was thinking about making a 3" wide 1/4" thick frame (architrave?) from MDP painted white. Is this a bad idea?
Making the frame is easy but I imaging the mitred joints will open over time and at only 1/4" thick I cannot see how to strengthen them as there will not be enough room for splines. I think a thicker frame, say 1/2" will be too heavy.

comments and thoughts welcomed.

Andy,

If the face of the angled wall is flat, could you prefabricate the architrave, then when completely glued together, apply it to the wall.

Would you also consider a short return into the reveal as well; in this way, the architrave/return increase in structural integrity.

Thanks Malc
The angled wall is flat and true, as far as I can tell. Fabricating the whole frame is an option I had thought of but with a glue join only 1/4" thick will it hold together?

I had discounted a return into the reveal due to the varying angles. Only the sill is a right angles to the wall. The two stiles angle inwards and the head. as can be seen is way over 90 degrees too.

Just spit balling here, but would it be possible to screw the MDF directly to the wall? That would enable you to attach the 4 separate pieces to the wall(sloped ceiling) so that they just appear to be a frame, could that work?

Also regarding movement in MDF, I have never had any moment (unless it gets wet), in my experience it is a very stable material to work with.

Erich, I might be over thinking this but this is what I want to avoid.

That is 3/4" thick MDF glued to the wall and butt jointed (whole length was 3.2 m so there had to be a join). I fill that crack every year or so and it still opens up.

I had intended to glue and nail my frame to the wall which as you say may be enough and perhaps I could staple the back of the mitres to help prevent movement

I hop you did not mean like this as was hoping for a 1/4" thick frame.

Or a bridle joint? (when does a bridle joint become a finger joint?)

Sussed it. Least I know what I will do. Laminated halving joint from 2 layers of 3mm mdf. This will give me maximum glued surface and be quick and easy.
Or, think as I type, a mitred 3mm frame laminated to 3mm layer underneath, butt jointed at the corners to add strength.Good idea?

I meant finger joints (AKA box joints) like you get on the corners of boxes.....so not as per the image, so much as sort-of 90 degrees from that.

I see. I could make a jig and run it through the table saw but feel my laminated joint will be a lot simpler.

.........easier, but weaker. Not that I think strength is at all important in this location.

Agreed, especially as if we are here long enough to redecorate that room I may well remove the frame and paper into the reveal.

That surprises me Andy, but if you have clear evidence that it doesn't work then it would make sense to not use the method!

Why not use a matching or contrasting wallpaper border strip?

That is a genius idea Rod. Thanks.
I will have to run it past the chief design consultant first and she will have to choose it of course but a self adhesive border strip could be ideal.
