Interresting.

We have similar brooms here mainly made and sold by the informal sector at traffic lights or along the streets.

They also do feather dusters.

Yep Phil.

As a lad I remember my dad cutting a broom handle from a young eucalyptus, trimming off the bark and letting it dry out for week. The tip that will go into the brooom was then shapoed a rough sharp point. He'd then also cut some reeds that was then tied into a tight bunch with binder wire, and then inserting the sharpened broom handle into the broom. He then tightened the wires around the broom to keep it all in place. The sweeping end was then trimmed on a chopping block with an axe by hand, and voila, a new broom. With the proper Afrikaans name: 'jaart besem'
OK, in limey-speak then: a yard broom, aka a broom to sweep the yard with.
