Help! Best position for drawer slides?

Postby 9fingers » 06 Apr 2017, 21:28

I'm going to be using full extension side-mounting drawer slides on a project.

Is there an optimum position vertically up the drawer box side that the slides should be mounted.

My commercial kitchen drawers have them about 25% up from the bottom and various project plans online show them variously half way or even quite near the top.

My drawer boxes are made from birch ply and so staying away from the very top and bottom makes sense but otherwise I can't come up with a convincing argument to myself of where to put them.

Am I over thinking this and should JFDI ?

In a situation like this, ie it doesn't really matter, then ease of assembly/manufacture is the key.

My logic has always installed them flush with the underside of the drawer Bob. 8-)

Hi Bob
I always router a dado down the middle as it take a lot of the quess work out also make it easier if you want to take the drawer out for any reason.

Are they Accuride style, bearing jobbies Bob?

I'd consider having them in-line with the pull, if they are slim to medium depth I don't think it matters overly. I've got use to using the concealed ones so there's not much choice but under mount.

I suspect you've fitted them by now though

Hi Jim,
I got round to fitting them over the weekend. I don't think mine are branded but are simple full extension ball bearing side mounting ones the section is 45 x12.5 mm purchased from Buller. http://www.bullerltd.co.uk/drawer-runne ... r-runners/

I only had two drawers in this cabinet. I put the drawer boxes inside the cabinet and measured 27mm vertical clearance at the top. So that is 3 x 9mm gaps. Cut a pair of 9mm spacers and another pair at about 45mm to rest the fixed slide on. This puts the slides about half way up the bottom drawer box.

I fixed the lower slides on each side first (having allowed for the depth of the drawer front) and then inserted the drawer box on its 9mm spacers. I slid out the runner and the drawer box by 30-40 mm or so and fitted one screw on each side .
Then I slid out the drawer further still resting firmly on the 9mm spacers to expose the location for the middle runner screw and fitted those. After removing the spacers, I checked everything was spot on and fitted the rear runner screws with the drawer box removed from the cabinet. Then is re-inserted the bottom drawer.
Next I fitted the top slides to the cabinet with the 45mm spacer resting on the bottom drawer.
The second drawer was then inserted on top of the bottom one with the 9mm spacer in between and fitted those runners in the same way as the first.

I would certain recommend fitting the body of the guide to the cabinet first.

All very straight forward really and I was certainly over thinking the job - must learn to stop doing that!!

The fronts were then fitted with thin card as spacers all round. The only photos I have are with the fronts prior to staining/varnishing.

PS It is also my first attempt at matching the grain of component parts of adjacent items and I'm quite pleased. A lot of hassle marking everything from original cutting through machining and glue up though.

Matching the grain was well worth the effort, they do look very nice.

Yes that's correct Andy -
The drawers have now been stained and first coat of varnish.
You will be able to see the progress to date when you visit on Friday.

This third (final) phase has all the odds and ends all following the barrister unit theme to match the rest of the room

An angled TV stand with mini barrister bookcase for the PVR, audio amp and dvd/cd player
A support frame to allow the stack to be assembled above the TV
A 900mm cupboard with timber panel doors for booze etc

Image

A double drawer unit in previous post
and three regular glazed barrister bookcase display units
Crown moulding top trim assembly

These units are all 850mm wide in a double width stack compared to the other two stacks made last year that are 1100mm wide.
