Stanley replacment tape. Now repaired.

Postby Andyp » 05 Aug 2017, 16:48

Does anyone know if I can take the blade from one of these

http://www.axminster.co.uk/stanley-powe ... ape-135804

And put it into one of these

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ ... 1777688441

If the links dont work I would like to take the blade from a modern stanley 1/2" x 10ft3m rule and put it into a old metal casing.
Is it doable or will springs and bits go flying to the four corners of the earth when I open them up?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

I don't think I've ever done it though I have spare blades for 30m ones.
Can I ask why you want to do it?
I've got at least two of the old ones but they are imperial.
It's says 6' and 2m but only marked in feet and inches.

Rod,
Because I am a sentimental, not so, old bugger and I have had the same metal cased tape in my pocket for at least 30 years. I managed to cut through it  with the band saw ( please dont ask ) and I would like to replace it. New tapes are cheap enough but I do not like the feel nor plastic bulkiness of them.
I could also buy an old secondhand metal cased one of course but they are dirty and shabby in comparison to the one I have.
Shall I give it a go?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Yes sure - I think they are like a clockwork motor just be careful to keep the spring together - the blades slot in.
They are nice and compact when compared to the new ones and the base is a nice 2" long.

I've tried taking those things apart and in my experience, you're on a hiding to nothing :( They don't last a particularly long time before the tape starts to wear, so I just bin them when they wear out and get a new one...but I've never had a tape for 30 years. Shouldn't you donate to the V&A Andy  - Rob

If I had somewhere to upload photos to I would. Mark how are you getting on?

Mine is in better nick than Rod's and more or less lives in my pocket. It was hardly ever used in the workshop but came out often to measure stuff in shops etc.

I just fancy trying to repair it rather than replacing it. Unfortunately I cannot find a replacement blade of that size, a few on ebay but not the 1/2" width. So buying a cheap plastic one and swapping seems a good idea. Probably :)

Stanley replacment tape measure blade.

Yes mines pretty worn

We had tapes provided on the construction sites and we got through loads of them - dropped in the mud, down shutters or leaving them laying around.
My favourites were Lufkins (made in Holland) - I have a few of them dotted around the house

Repaired.
I had to buy a whole new tape to repair it but this shows quite how small the old metal ones are.

I had to give the spring a few extra turns as it had unwound a little when the end got cut off.
I also gave it a few drops of sewing machine oil.

I did lose the spring but it did not take long to untangle and rewind.

Hooked up the new blade.

I did take a video but only to prove it still retracts.

Financially worth it - no. But it is much more comfortable in my pocket.

Talking of tapes .. I had a tape "fail" once.
wifey bought home a 100m tape, the ones you wind in with a handle.
I used it to measure the bedroom for a carpet.
Luckily I always generously oversize for fitting
I got the the door, and the carpet was short
I had to patch 3" on the threshold.
Turns out the tape had a 6" lead in, that I hadn't noticed

Thanks, the last one would have lasted another 30 years had I not cut the end off on the bandsaw

If somebody made a normal type tape measure with lead in, I'd buy one. Turn the hook so it faced upwards and it'd be great for marking out. None of this holding the tape on 100mm then forgetting to add it on
