Record 1 Ton Vice

Postby wizer » 18 Sep 2017, 08:32

Hi Guys

I need a big chunky engineer's vice for the workshop at my place of work. The new ones are just rubbish and we've gone through a couple. They mainly use them for quite rough work, bending, squashing, etc.

I can't get a sense for size when looking at the old Record vices on eBay. Is the 1 Ton vice actually quite small in the range?

Need as big as I can source locally that will take abuse

Tom,
I have the Record 1 ton vice. Here is an image if it helps. I would say that yes it is small and probably not suitable for rough engineering work.

I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks Andy

That really helps, I couldn't find a sense of scale online anywhere.

I think II need to frequent some boot fairs to find a nice old chunky one

I think going for a known older fashioned maker. and stick to cast STEEL not cast iron will give the best chance of abuse survival.

I did have a spare one but gave it away a couple of years ago.

If you want squashing and pressing capability then how about a fly press - designed for the job and often almost giveaway prices used compares with new. However, capable of squashing fingers by idiot users so maybe HASAW issues?

I have just bought them a 20t hydraulic press, so hopefully that's going to take most of the heavy work.

I lead a team of Bulgarian workers, mostly working on old vintage vans. They are good, but rough on the tools and forget their English language skills when advised to treat their tools with respect...

They have broken a few vices, mainly from pounding on them, but the last one broke at the screw casting. It's like they cast them out of honeycombe these days... :!:
