Noob Veneer question

Postby 9fingers » 25 Sep 2017, 10:07

I've been given some 1mm ish oak veneer.
I thought initially it was going to be odds and ends to practice with but it turns out there is quite a lot and so it might be heading for a future project.
The thing is that it is about 30 years old and bone dry with just a few "with the grain" cracks.

Would it help stop any more of these happening is say I went over it with a steam iron or is that a daft idea?

When I get wood that’s too dry be it veneer or turning blanks I store it outside but under cover that way it can take on moisture from the air naturally & makes it easier to work.

Interesting idea! Thanks Doug. I'll see if I can put it in SWMBO's garden shed. Being so thin, it should not take that long to take up a bit more moisture.

I'd go along with Doug on that. Veneer which is too dry is tricky to work with, a little bit of wet in it won't do any harm - Rob

I wouldn't worry about splits. just tape them as you find them.

Joins are the thing that takes a bit of practice - keeping them tight closed and having straight edges to join. I pull them together with masking tape strips on the glue side then turn over and paper tape the face. Once the paper tape is dry, peel off the masking tape on the glue side. Guess you could use low tack masking tape on the face. paper tape can just be wetted and falls off when the job is done.

Any links for paper tape sources Gents?

My google foo is bust today! Despite searching for paper veneering tape, I keep getting the wood veneer tape.
Can't seem to find it on the axi website either.
Ebay has paper tape for artists water colour stretching purposes by the ton.
It is water based so might that do?

TIA

http://www.thewoodveneerhub.co.uk/finis ... mm-x-200m/

Not used them Bob but a quick search showed them as the cheapest I found, Peter Sefton stocks it but double the price

Thanks Doug, shame the £5 postage is more than the tape :D

True, but in total still cheaper than some places just for the tape & in shorter lengths :eusa-doh:

I’ve just bought a guide bush which cost only slightly more than the postage, but I couldn’t carry on without it so had to bite the bullet

I wouldn't worry too much over the paper tape. It's pretty flimsy stuff. 20mm wide and rizla thin. Thicker/wider may well be better.

If you do want paper tape then try a search for 'gummed paper tape' which turns up lots of cheap alternatives. Can't see there will be much difference between brown paper tape and white :)

Yes I've ordered from your suggestion and agree overall they were the cheapest.
One ebay vendor I found was charging less on ebay than direct from their website crazy really!
