Wellingtonia

Postby Rod » 03 Oct 2017, 19:00

I bought a some a while ago and used it to make a bird feeding table which has survived the elements very well - it seems to be very weather resistant.
So after a few non productive years I’m actually getting around to make something - replacing this which disintegrated after 40yrs: A weather station.

Here’s the Wellingtonia with some English oak in the background - ready for another repair job:

Not sure, but I wonder if that Wellingtonia stuff is a type of cedar which gives rise to it's durability? Good to see you making stuff again though Rod - Rob

We've got some local to us down here!

In fact, possibly the very first planted in the UK!

It’s very light in weight, very strong though not close grained.
Not used commercially - I bought it from Paul Goulden a few years ago as a bit of an experiment. Pink colour is not to everyone’s taste.

I do wish that there was not half a dozen ways of saying the same thing when it comes to timber. Looked up Wellingtonia and it appears to be Giant Redwood or Sequoia.
Whatever it is called I look forward to seeing it being used.

I guess it will be similar to Western Red Cedar. In which case don't drop anything on it as it will bruise and dent very easily.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Going by the NT article it was named Wellingtonia to get back at our lost Colony .
They must have used it in the States as they chopped quite a few down.
Here’s a shoe rack I made for my daughter a few years ago which I think is still going strong.

I made a start on the replacement cabinet which as well as acting as the “Home” for my Bluetooth outside thermometer also protects the outside tap.
I copied the dimensions of the old cabinet exactly and cut the wood accordingly, then remembered the old one was mounted on a frame — bug...!!
Then play stopped work with the arrival of our youngest Granddaughter aged 2 1/2 but never mind I’ll find a work around it.
