Plywood supply

Postby MattS » 06 Oct 2017, 09:51

Hi all, now this won't be to everyone's taste but where do you get plywood like this from? I want to use it for some built in furniture in our house but struggled to find this grain appearance. The local good timber yard does birch or dead cheap stuff and tried many of the builders supply places which all seem to have the pinky coloured hardwood stuff. Struggling!

I do not know what that stuff is Matt but I have always found Richard Russell very helpful and willing to deal in single sheets to hobbyists.
You could even send them an email with the picture asking if they can supply it.

They are in Croydon, SE London.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

it looks like cheap shuttering ply to me ?
could you not use that, and sand and seal ?

I used to buy "AC" which was "good one side" , but that was a long time ago.
And a long time ago, even the cheap stuff was better than the good stuff these days !

I've certainly had that type when asking for sheathing or shuttering ply but not necessarily as even/smooth as that looks.

Sheathing/shuttering tends to be reasonably strong low grade stuff but not particular guarantee as to source timber type or even surface quality, knot hole repairs etc as is designed for short term use or to be covered up

I second Andy's approach to take/show it to a plywood merchant and ask him to quote for similar look and the surface quality that you want.

Mike G might be able to suggest some details it he has used any in Grand Designs, "live in a packing case" type jobs.

Thanks Andy will take a look.

Tusses, yes similar to shuttering ply but that just has so many plugs and defects on the surface. Admittedly most of the nice interiors using this type of ply are abroad but must be able to get it somewhere...

Where are you based Matt?

I like that look, we are having this look in our new extension.

Plywood is graded on each side. This might help you

Hi Tom, still living in Staplehurst. Thanks for the link, I am familiar with plywood and used various grades but don't really want birch this time. The one in the photo I'm fairly certain is spruce, but would appear to have one good face.

Hi Matt,
I’ve used quite a lot of pine faced MDF previously the photo shows an off cut I used for making a cover for my spindle moulder.

I’d have thought you’d be able to source the same in ply but if it’s for furniture then chances are the MDF would be cheaper & more readily available

Matt - my first impression was as others have said , shuttering ply , what we used to call " G1S" ( good one side) . I believe there is a modern equivalent these days . I'm not quite so active these days but I would automatically go to Totton Timber nr Southampton . They have a good selection of sheet materials including pine-faced MDF and many others . What part of the country are you ?

I think you'll find it's Douglas Fir plywood.

Brilliant. Douglas fir has brought up a couple of potential suppliers and one mentioned it had pretty much disappeared from sale in the UK. But is now making a comeback, thanks all for comments and help :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Thought I’d “finish” this thread in case it’s if use to anyone. I contacted a number of suppliers for Douglas plywood and the price was compatible with birch at around £90-100 far too much for our planned usage.

Anyway I went back to the drawing board and landed on my feet! Travis Perkins sell a Selex structural plywood with brilliant grain pattern. Turns out there is a TP in the next little town to us I didn’t even realise it was there. Very helpful staff, lifted a pallet down from the top rack for me to see and gave me a very much better price. Ended up with 11 sheets at around £25 each.

Here’s the first panel going in, whole wall will be pegboard. Done using the parf guide, bought for this and also for workbench project.

Looks nice but how did you get it at that price. If I go onto TP online it is saying that it is £38 / sheet!

Plus VAT plus a random figure depending on the day, the time, the weather and 'chaos theory' if you go into my local TP - never known a company that charges so much for so little, seemingly at random!

Great that you have got what you wanted - looks good.

Travis Perkins (like most other builders merchants) can be flexible on pricing on some items and also depending whether or not you are an account customer. I always haggle.

As I said I landed on my feet with this one! When I went to look and said I’d be needing 11 sheets and more in future (which I will). They set me up an account and quoted me that price. :eusa-dance:
