Oak Weathering

Postby Rod » 09 Oct 2017, 13:14

I made this Slider Bench a few years ago from locally sourced English Oak.
I treated it initially with some garden furniture oil but for many years it’s been left outside, in the open, untreated.
Still structurally sound, the colour has changed somewhat.

The oils seem to wash off in a season, anyone found a good one. Osmo is probably the best I have used. The alternative is to cover it when not in use or varnish. Varnish won't last much longer though and then you have a different kind of problem.

Yeah that's why I never put anything on oak which is exposed to the weather. It's a losing battle.

I originally treated it with Osmo UV Oil and kept it covered up outside but it went mouldy, so in the end just left it uncovered, untreated and give it a gentle wash each year.
It’s smaller cousin is kept under wraps, stored in my shed over winter and it’s kept its original colour:

We’ve got a couple of other benches which reside permanently outside with “hardwood” slats that are beginning to fail. Next task is to replace those with oak.

Fresh oak oiled looks lovely though. What wood could I use instead that still has a nice grain colour. I have to replace the slats on my bench for next year

Nothing, Tim. It will all go silver or grey in time. That's why the current fad for untreated timber boarding on blocks of flats and some houses is destined, in my view, to be a short-lived fashion.

If you can get them out of the rain but in the fresh air during winter it will help. Even propping one end up so that water runs off and does not pool will help.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Once the tannins have been washed out, I reckon sunlight might possibly be as big a factor as rain.

I think Sun more than rain, judging on stuff I've made that is part shaded , but fully out of the rain.

Totally agree about the sun and discoloration. Water sitting on wood is not good for longevity either.
