fixing double sockets box in stud wall.

Postby Dan0741 » 12 Nov 2017, 20:41

Evening all,

Quick question re expanding foam - I'm trying to replace some single sockets for doubles in an old house and am only partly able to secure one of them to an adjacent stud, the other end is free and flexes slightly, I was going to surround by injecting foam to secure it all up a bit as i'm concerned that movement may eventually fail. To be clear this is not the whole fixing solution, but a method of firming up one end.

Is this a practical solution and if so are any foams/adhesives to be recommended.

Many thanks is advance, :D

From a mechanical perspective I imagine it would be fine. There may be some regulations relating to whether it’s safe or not though that I would advise searching for.

Dan, I would suggest that if you can't fix a back box directly and securely to a piece of timber that you use a plasterboard box instead. Half-and-half solutions never work, and foam is a bad idea around electric cabling (it can break down the insulation).

Ah - Yes. Thanks Gents - thats not one I would have thought of. I read a post from someone saying that whole plasterboard sheets had been held up with some adhesive foam and thought a small box would have been fine. Never gave corrosion a thought.... Thanks very much.

Or you could just simply get one of these

I think you can also get triples too if that is of interest.

Alternatively you could make the hole large enough to secure some batten to attach the box to and then plaster over to make good. Easifil is good for novice plastering like me.

If it's wobbly due to uneven surface behind would gripfil help? Hard to imagine exactly what situation you have there.

Wobbly sockets sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
