I made some marking gauges.

Postby Mike G » 21 Nov 2017, 15:08

I fiddled about a bit with some scrap (oak and beech) over the weekend, and made myself some marking gauges. I tried a few different things, but what they all have in common is a new locking mechanism which allows setting and adjustment to be done with just one hand. This can be important in various situations. Anyway, here they are:

The end-grain of the dowels is to act in place of the brass wear strips on your typical commercial version.
I've learnt enough from these to adjust here and there before I make some jigs to aid the process of doing a batch for christmas presents. Whilst these are all marking gauges, I have a cutting version on the bench at the moment, and I've sketches done for a mortise gauge too.

If anyone wants one just shout.

Well, it won't be that actual one. I'll be making a batch.

How much? I dunno. Does £20 +p&p sound OK?

Beautiful Mike, im in. The lighter squarish one would be my favourite if you have any spare after your production run, but if its easier to make all the same whichever suits.

I'll be making batches of both. How does that price sound?

The light squarish one in the photo is over-sized for working with big oak beams. I'm not sure you'd want one like that for everyday use. Are you after one the same size as the dark one with contrasting timbers?

They do look nice Mike. What are you using for the actual marking pin?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

I've used a masonry nail for one. I've ordered some hardened wire for the rest, because the masonry nail is too coarse.

Very nice Mike, I have a number of making gauges, so I will pass on your offer, that price is very reasonable.

Dave

Price fine Mike. I like the traditional colour of the big one thats all. Im building up a collection of tools i have made, quite embarrassingly i started off with a bench hook and made some solid oak mallets and a few other bits. I have made a tool wall that I have started to make racks for my limited tool collection. I have a store of very large oak blocks from a sturdy but dead tree last year that I have had a play with. Its from the HQ where i work and i remember it standing; so it has an added significance when im whacking a chisel! :D

I really like the idea of these! Super design.

Made a conventional one recently but this one handed operation is much superior.

If I was making this type I would probably have looked at a cam locking lever from a push bike wheel or seat locking mechanism as an alternative.

If you want pins they are used in carpet stretchers, sorry but I don't know who makes them.

Nice, but the $64,000,000 question requires a definitive answer...did you have to stray onto the dark side and use a (whispers quietly) a lathe? Or did you bottle out and get someone else to to the spiny stuff?  - Rob
