Yakasugi Gloatage

Nothing much happening in the 'shop mainly for the very good reason that I've been away in Japan for nearly a month, so here's something to whet your woodworking appetite; a small parcel of Yakusugi or Japanese Cedar. This particular tree grows only on the island of Yakushima and is unique as it constantly regenerates after being battered by the typhoons. As such, trees easily attain an age of 1000+ years old which then makes the wood hideously expensive. The board shown has the price chalked on it (3500JPN or £24) but it's only 8mm thick. The larger, highly figured block on the lhs was 22,000 JPN or £152). Somewhere in those blocks are fantastic projects waiting to escape...I've just got to find them now - Rob

I wouldn’t have the nerve to work on wood as expensive as that.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Could do, depends on what I do with the stuff. One project will almost certainly be a box of some sort but I'm not sure what will come after. Thin veneers would definitely be a way of making the stuff go further - Rob

We took thousands of pics Rog, which I'm currently going through. What a bloody nightmare as they came from four different sources (two iPhones and two camera cards) but from a wood manglers perspective, this little sequence may be of some interest. Some time ago I made a couple of boxes from Bog Oak, one of which was destined for Japan. This is what happened:

when she realised that her box was 5300 years old.

...and just to show I was there;

Tomichie was only 16 and had been in training as a maiko in Kyoto for six months. She performed the tea ceremony for us and a traditional dance. A real delight to meet her and one of the highlights of our trip - Rob

I know the problem with multiple camera devices. We came back fron the USA with pictures on 7 devices!

I can imagine the box was very well received.
