Where to get what

Postby 9fingers » 27 Aug 2014, 12:04

I've been considering whether a sticky topic on the above would be of interest.

Something along the lines of a either a request of " where can I get left handed screwdrivers" or " I've just found this really helpful seller of long weights" or just exceptional service but only related to relevant items

The results of a discussion/solution/service etc could then be edited (by me) into a summary post at the top of the thread. In time this could turn into a one stop list of where to get stuff.
We would need to stick to the right side of recommendations and not stray into advertising to adhere to our own rules. I'm thinking of Workshop essentials DVDs and Tuff Saws bandsaw blades etc

Anyone think this is a good idea or would not like to see something like this?

Lets discuss the principle in this topic and if all OK I'll start one for the specifics.

As a newcomer it would be very helpful to me. Can it be broad enough to allow 'where can I get?' Posts as well? These could then be turned around into 'where to gets' if a good answer is provided.

Seems like a good idea to me as long as we have clear guidelines on advertising and active moderation to make sure we stick to them.

I would guess a PM to Bob or an open post in the Feature requests section would be the way to go if you want something added, so he can then tweak to make it compliant…

Yes that could work or perhaps seeing how the discussion goes in the thread and moderate as necessary there and I'd put a carefully considered extract going into the top of the thread.
I would not expect to see anyone plugging their own services or product aggressively but goods or services recommended by a satisfied customer should be OK.
I'd not be comfortable about airing negative reports on service as those can be very subjective.

It might all get too hard.. but I'm prepared to give it a go. I feel it could be useful for off beat items rather extolling the virtues of Axminster for example as we all know you can get basic items there.

Maybe import routes for Veritas or other transatlantic suppliers?

I've started what I've called the "buyers guide" with a few of my supplier tips as an example of the sort of thing I mean.
Comments on the principles here please and discussion/suggestions for inclusion in that topic.
Thanks

Might it be worth putting links in as much as possible? For example, link to Steve's website and DaveR's DVDs etc ?

I have my doubts that members/visitors will search the thread before asking but we can certainly give it a go.

Every time anyone asks about replacement batteries (MIke G was the latest) I always recommend Strikalite http://www.strikalite.co.uk/ the guys there were very helpful and I see that Aidan has used them too.

If Mike G comes back with a thumbs up maybe they should be included.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thats a new one on me Russ and google is not helping me either.

Can you point to a picture please? I can even begin to think what they are.
I've only seen skirting nailed with clasp nails, screwed and plugged with woodscrews or dabbed on with gripfill bodgers compound.
