I needed a box

Postby 9fingers » 01 May 2018, 21:49

I've not been writing my for the forum lately as I've been doing other stuff including fitting a Velux window in our roof and making good inside.
To do this I needed to buy a tool. Nothing very special but it came with lots of consumables in vacuum moulded tray that was useless for long term storage once removed from the cardboard packaging.

So I needed a box with compartments to hold everything.

No wip pictures as I set out to make just a functional box - nothing pretty

A couple years back a mate gave me some timber from an old front door, once planed up is was a delightful chocolate brown. Lots of mortise holes in it but manage to cut and plane up a good quantity of 12mm thick boards.
All the joints were made on my box joint jig using 4mm fingers

The lids are 4mm ply sanded down to about 3.5 mm to give an easy sliding fit (after varnishing) in 4mm grooves.

This is the inside view

All the staples kept in compartments by size and in the box with the stapler so hopefully I won't lose them now!

Thanks for looking

I like that, Bob...something else on the TUIT list !

Your comment re re-using old timber, I had a huge amount of timber came out of the house. Most of it very nice tight grain as well, softwood, mind. But I've always found that whenever I needed to recycle stuff, if the length was long enough then the width and thickness would be wrong.

If it was the right length and width, the thickness would be wrong.

If it was the right length, width and thickness then there would be nail holes.

If it was the right length, width and thickness and no nail holes then there wouldn't be enough pieces.

So I burnt the lot.

Nice Bob. Mine is in a tatty old cardboard box

Struggling to see where you would need a stapler to fit a Velux.

Half the stuff I make is from old timber, off cuts, salvaged stuff etc. If I didn't have that stored accessibly, I'd never make anything.

The roofing membrane is cut in the process. You would staple it back down before it gets permanently held by battens.

The problem I had was the staple selection pack. The various sizes came in a micron thin flimsy vacuum moulded tray with about 20mm wasted space between each size which would not last very long in the workshop so the box idea grew from the need to sort that out and the nice piece of "whatever it is" timber and an excuse to use the box joint jig etc plus the pleasure of doing some woodwork all the trimming and f4rting around tidying up after the retrofit window.

Besides the next job on the" honey do" list is decorating not only the window area but the whole hall stairs and landing and I hate decorating. I did 33 years ago when I built it and now she says it needs doing again!

That's a very neat solution, I just bought a new stapler because somewhere in all the house moves my old one has vanished. Guaranteed ill find it now and have two! I will need to make something like that because inevitably the staples will become separated from the stapler.

I bought ours so that I could make a large frame out of roofing battens for SWMBO to staple a fine mesh net over. It's for the garden to go over the sweetcorn and keeps the bugs off.

I am lucky in that SWMBO loves painting, it's getting her to stop that's the trick and also having to clear up after her including getting the paint off her too!
