PB advice & hinges

Postby Phil » 02 May 2018, 07:41

Some advice please on fixing up PB where hinge screws have pulled out.

In the dressing room the cupboard doors are 2300mm long with 3 'soft close' hinges.

Question - are 3 hinges enough for that length door?

Where the screws are pulled out, what is the best way to 're-plug' the hole in the PB?

I can add another hinge in the middle of the two on the top section which will give it 4. I need to keep the other 3 as they are so not to have big visible holes.

Part of the problem is that the useless builder/cupboard people have the 2 doors fixed to the same panel with the hinges opposite one another.

Thanks
Phil

You have doors hinged directly to plasterboard?

That will just never work. It doesn't matter how you fix it, that is a fundamentally flawed idea. How about a photo or two and we'll see if there is a way around the problem, but just putting it back to how it was is no solution.

Insert dowels at right angles to and to intersect with the screw holes and cut off flush.

You then have a hardwood plug to screw into for the hinges.

Thanks Bob.

That was my first thought, but, the dowels would show up in the facing panel.

The pic of the bottom hinge that has ripped off.
As can be seen there are more than just 2 screw holes. The A-holes who did the cupboards had the 2 doors hinges in exactly the same place on the dividing panel.
They then fixed the one door, but all the drilled holes were still there weakening whatever is screwed in.

My thought was to fill/plug the hole with ‘something’ so that the screws could grip something solid.
Maybe also add another hinge in-between the middle and top one?

Would a 'kitchen hinge repair plate' be of any use ?

I’d add a couple more hinges per door, & I’d put a nut & bolt through the board & both hinges, that is if the hinges either side of the board are in line.

Unit connectors would work something like this https://eastcoastkitchens.co.uk/hafele/ ... gKoC_D_BwE you can get them in differing lengths to suite your application

Thanks Doug.

I was going to add one more hinge, but with that effort can just as well add another one.

The A-holes did eventually offset the hinges but only after drilling all the holes.

I will have to patch the breakout and fill the holes.

Fitting these hinges will be a whole new experience for me. :o
