Reconfiguring timber and glass doors

Postby MattS » 18 May 2018, 13:45

We have these glass doors which need some work. We don’t really like the glass and anyway one has been poorly replaced. We are generally keeping doors etc original, even if 1960s isn’t everyone’s taste!

Ideally with these, as the room on the right is a dining space with no windows we want to maximise light. Could I remove all glazing rails and have one piece of (toughened or as appropriate for regs) glass without any issue in weakening door?

As I recall from selling doors in the 60s if you took those glazing bars out you’d end up with what was known as a Pattern 10 door (or is they were double, Pattern 20) so I’d say it would be Ok.

Do you think that it would make a lot of difference if you left the glazing bars in and just replaced the glass with clear?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Yes certainly, the bar removal was more an aesthetic decision when the glass would be out anyway. Partly as I don’t like the smaller panes much. But also next to the door is a floor to ceiling window which had been filled in and I’ve reinstated but it doesn’t have bars and with left and right posts fixed I couldn’t use tenons so don’t fancy adding rails even if I liked them!!

I’m pretty certain the removal of the bars should not affect th integrity of the frame.

Its a standard Pattern 10.
I think by the time you have finished messing about with it you would be better to get a new one from Howdens. They are pretty cheap. Laminated glass will be fine.

Yup..those glazing bars add little in the way of structural integrity.

Only problem with buying from Howdens would be if the size wasn't the same. Or do Howden's do a bespoke service ?

Thanks all, I’ll be going for it and removing the bars. Not considering new, firstly no need and secondly this is a house refurb on a budget!!
