Unusual sash window construction

We had a few days away for the missus' birthday and stayed at The Old Deanery in Ripon. I was intrigued by this sash window construction. At first sight it looks nothing out of the ordinary.

But when opened,

you suddenly realise that it slides behind an extra rail which struck me as (a) peculiar and (b) over-engineered and so (c) why did they do it ?

I did find out why but thought I'd pose the question for you guys to mull.

Why ?

No idea about that window, but I am pleased not to be alone in looking at how stuff is done when I am in somewhat different buildings. LOML thinks I am very odd.

Another member of the 'how did they make that?' (or why) club here :)

At least I have mostly stopped entering buildings and looking up at the lighting now I don't make lighting any more.

Mentally take away that heavy cross-member and you have a tall and narrow opening. This would have produced an awkward looking window. So that's my guess: aesthetics. It's all about proportions.

An interesting theory, Mike, but the answer is a lot more pragmatic. Take a look at the building seen through the window for a clue !

The extra rails is aesthetic and hides the heavy stone cross piece on the outside?

What a lovely place, we went for our anniversary. Really enjoyed it.
Did you go in the cathedral and look at the pew carvings? Apparently it is where Lewis Carroll got the idea for the rabbit hole.

We did go in but a guest choir was in rehearsing and so not able to see the pews (I'm assuming that the ones you are referring to are the very old ones?)

Digressing a little, we had a fabulous run down over the North Pennines on Bank Holiday Monday in the 20 year-old S2000. Hood down. Sun out. No traffic. What's not to like ? :D
