Ups and Downs

Postby Rod » 19 Jun 2018, 14:37

I’ve seen Robert Ingham a few times at Art in Action demonstrating box making generally using Steamed Pear.
It looked like an interesting wood to work with so a few years back I bought a chunk.
I came it across it yesterday to find it full of worm holes!! :(

Now B/S meat:

Whilst chopping it up I used my Billhook that I’d repaired with a new Hickory handle - another disaster the handle broke off. I was only using a Thor hammer with it :(

But on the Up Side I found some more walnut
and a chunk of London Plane:

Some BirdsEye Maple

And some more Pear, English Cherry, Zebrano and Mahogany (sapele)

Oh and this which I cannot make out?

I started planking up the LP on the BS and got 3 out quarter sawn with nice rays, 100mm wide.
The rays seem to peter out in the remaining chunk.

Shame about the pear. Hope they don't spread.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

A nice bit of quarter sawn London plane is on my 'busy list' to purchase; that's after some more quarter sawn Euro Oak (and a bit of English if I can find some) to top up dwindling supplies in the 'shop  - Rob

London Plane or Lacewood when it's cut right like yours, Rod, is one of my favourite woods.

You've got some nice wood there, Rod. Sadly when I moved I sold off all my exotic wood. All I have left are a few small pieces of birds' eye maple.
If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

Those look like the long cases you made Roger- nice.

This turned out to be another lacewood, Rapala Lacewood. Very different though, very dense and feels hard.
