Wood from Hell

Rob (Woodbloke) used to have a piece of timber with that title but I’ve come across another one.
Some Zebrano I’ve been working on for the lids to the boxes I’m making.

The dark grain is very hard with the lighter material in between softer, grain orientation all over the place and easily torn. Even my scraper planes wouldn’t touch it. A light setting the plane just skates on the dark stripes, setting a bit harder the blade digs in and makes it worse. The only “cure” was to sand together with the use of a hand scraper. Beginning to hate the stuff

I once went to a modernist house in Brno (now Czech Republic) by Mies van der Rohe*, and it was full of Zebrano veneered furniture........with the veneers running the wrong way (ie across the length & width of the wood, rather than along it). It was comfortably the most god-awful furniture I have ever seen, and it put me off Zebrano for life. I really don't know what I would do with it if I was given it FOC, other than put it on the bonfire, and now we've seen here how hard it is to work, I like it even less.

Is that veneer or the “real” stuff?
You must have used a lot of sand paper

No, all solid apart from the veneered inset panel.
