The old tool store

Postby Doug » 04 Nov 2018, 21:51

Had a drive over to Lincolnshire on Friday to meet up with a few Woodworking mates, I’d given one my old Wadkin planner so after delivering that he took me over to see his latest kitchen, I was interested to see how the Accoya columns I’d turned for him had worked out after being veneered with Rosewood, no surprise they looked stunning, as did the kitchen.

We then went to see another friends new workshop which was not far from Ray Iles Old Tool Store so after the shop tour we popped along to meet Ray, what an interesting chap after a good look round the shop he then showed us round his workshop, what an Aladdin’s cave, wood & metalworking machines of every sort.
If you’re ever in the area it is well worth a visit the shop is packed with old hand tools of every description, here’s a few photos of just some of the goodies.

He was also kind enough to demonstrate & let us have a go with his new spoon carving knife

I couldn’t leave without a souvenir of the day & came away with this lovely Record No3 the base & sides of which Ray had re-ground

I like the Rosewood.
I’ve bought several things from Ray over the years but didn’t realise he had that much stuff, where does he get them from?
I know he bought a plane lapping tool from Record, he used it on a Norris A5 I sent him and fitted a new blade to match the mouth.

It was almost unbelievable how much gear he had, there was shelf after shelf of boxes of tools & so many drawer units.

I never thought to ask where he got the tools I guess a lifetime of collecting & dealing in tools, his workshop was packed with machinery some of which had come from companies that had closed down, numerous lathes, surface grinders, millers, a forge & spring hammer amongst them, basically he was geared up to make almost anything in the tool line.
It was also nice to see he had a young chap working for him so at least his fountain of knowledge was being pasted down to a younger generation
