What fittings to join 2 pieces

Postby Coolhands » 21 Jan 2019, 23:30

I have 2 white sheet (like Formica) to join together that enclose a washing machine. I need to join them at 90 degrees. What fittings can you recommend? Only thing I can think of is those little plastic blocks but I’m also worried about precisely drilling through accurately to locate them with the screws?

It’s just in a rental flat so not high spec

Battons:

Top and side board (won’t have overlap)

So i need a couple of something’s to go where they join on the inside, but the screws need to enter from the outside as will be screwed with washing machine in place

Ideally that I can buy from screwfix etc or ebay, not Axminster or whatever

You don't drill for those blocks. You use screws which drill their own way in (it's hard to find anything other than this type). They're dead easy, those blocks, and quite forgiving of being slightly misplaced.

Oh I hadn’t considered that. So screw the 2 boards with those blocks on the inside face, then I can manoeuvre the 2 joined sheet pieces onto the battens and fasten to the battens.

Thanks

If you have room and want full width support then a timber batten would also work - you can then pre drill it if you are worried about positioning. As Mike says though, those plastic blocks are fairly robust. My only concern would be how much weight is your tenant going to put on that shelf - a basket of wet washing for example. An offcut of worktop if you have one might be a bit stronger :eusa-think:

I think you're describing 'modesty blocks'.

Though they won't work if you're wishing to fix after the machine is in.

A batten is a good suggestion. Perhaps to the wall, underside of top and floor.

You could use metal screw cups, plastic 'snap cap' covers or mirror screws to keep it looking tidy.
