Dovetail Joint

Postby Dalboy » 28 Mar 2019, 21:15

I have not hand cut a dovetail joint of any kind since leaving school quite a few years ago I am now in my 60's, but I have cheated and cut them with a jig and router.

I thought that I would have a go as I would like to produce some nice pieces with hand-cut dovetails so today I found a piece of wood that was an offcut from a prepared plank and set to it to produce this joint.

Is there anything I could do to have improved this attempt. (the darker area is where I wet it to show it better). It has not been glued.

I know that I need to practice but I still was quite pleased with today's effort

That's better than my first attempt with a jig, Derek.

I was given a Leigh jig. It has taken me several times to get the hang of it, but I'm getting better.

Leigh jigs are notoriously slow to get the hang of.

Nowt wrong with a jig dovetailing is a bit like sharpening ... Just do it how you want to... It's one of those 'tyre kicking' obsessions.

Looks good Derek, your pieces sit square on the deck. A little bit of fettling to get the seat, but pretty much there.

I tried some practice pieces by hand, and then some more on the jig. Both are getting better.

I also got a Katz-Moses magnetic jig this week.

After I finished the bench, I'm going to have a go with that.

I've tried the katz-Moses jig, it's good, really easy to see what's going on

Looks like a super refined Barron dovetail guide, or something that works along the same principle - Rob
