Yet to be air dried

Postby Doug » 13 Apr 2019, 12:56

The nice man from the Wood yard informed me Wednesday that he had a bit of Elm in so as I needed to go over to Boston yesterday I went via Newark & the day turned into quite an enjoyable road trip.

This is the big old Stenner bandsaw with 4” blade & tungsten teeth getting up to speed

Easily cutting through the over 24” high slab

Some fantastic colouring inside

I picked up 5 planks in total these two having some lovely pink pippy knots all over

It’ll be over 2 years before I can do anything with them but I think it will be worth the wait.
There’s a video of the cutting of the slab in my Instagram feed if anyone is interested

I love elm. I made our kitchen table out of a piece of 300 year old elm which had been a wheelwright's bench. I acclimatised it indoors for many many months. Despite being 300 years old and well seasoned, it still moved. There's now a gap up the middle of the table some 3 or 4 mm wide. Be very careful with drying it, but even more careful in what you choose to do with it afterwards.

Agree with Mike on this one; elm is fabulous stuff but will move, twist and warp like a break dancer on steroids. I condition mine very slowly in the workshop for as long as possible and always sneak up to the finished dimension a few mm at a time. I've found though, that once it's stable it doesn't move very much - Rob
