Dormer

Postby techauthorbob » 20 Oct 2019, 15:33

Hi All,
We had a leaky lower corner on one of our dormers recently, this dormer is 30+ years old and has more or less had it's day.

I am torn between getting someone in to do it all or just tearing it out and doing it myself. I have easy access and all the skills I need so I am confident about doing the work ( apart from the flat roof - I want a fibreglass one to match the front) BUT I have no idea as to the construction details required around the join to the roof / flashing area.
Has anybody any recommendations, info etc, or any decent sites I could look at?

The roof is slates at 45 degrees and the existing one is about 2.5 metres long by 1.2 metres high ( 8 x 4 in old money).

I have a roofer friend to help if needs be so no problems there!

Slate! Nightmare.......

That means removing all the slates above the dormer, in a diagonal away from each corner, and re-ridging. Or tingles, which are a short-term solution.

Also, EPDM (rubber) is your best and cheapest bet if it is a flat roof. Fit and forget, lasts forever.
