He thought they were paint tin openers, tsk tsk... :eusa-whistle:

Love ya, Bob ;)

I think the two in the middle are actually really old shell augers rather than gouges and have a funny looking cutting edge at the end, I've got a couple of really long ones for boring out lamps on the lathe. Bottom one looks a bit like a spoon bit, seems needlessly long for a gouge unless it was an incannel ground one for paring work.

That's a nose bit.

Like a shell bit, but the fragile looking turned-over tip has a cutting edge. The long flute fills up with shavings but they stay in it when you pull the bit out to empty it.

As you say, good for long holes in end grain.

There's a great description in The Village Carpenter by Walter Rose of drilling out elm logs to make pipes (for pumping water out of a well with a hand-pump) using such a bit, albeit on rather a grander scale.

I didnt say I didnt have any, I just said i cant use them   8-)

The bent yellow handled marples was given to me by my dad as a wedding present in 1972 (there were 4 originally). The blue marples set were given to me by my son in 2014 when I started woodworking. He couldnt stop laughing, me being a 50 year metal worker and him being a time served carpenter. The rest have arrived in various ways, mostly from dead people. :)
