Lathe stand

The new lathe needs a stand made before we move, to get the footprint space required in the garage.

This is another project using up stock already in the workshop.

The top will be some left over 19mm ply, the frame some pine 30 x 105mm

The first part of the construction is the frame onto which the top will be attached.
Straight forward 2 beams.

Image

Which will have two cross beams, not at the ends, but inset by 100mm to allow for the legs.

Image

The cross beams are bolted into place. Used 6mm bolts.
First time I have tried this method of joining.
The holes for the washers and nuts were drilled with a 20mm forstner bit. Tricky getting then in.

Image

The legs ready for trimming to the right length

Image

Fitting the legs. They are bolted on with 8mm nuts and bolts, using large washers as the pine is soft.
Where I used the smaller washers, they actually pulled into the wood.

The frame is completed.

The stand is completed, and the top checked for alignment.
The top was cut and drilled when the top frame was completed.

Image

As an after thought I decided to fit some wheels onto the back to make it easier to move around. The wheels had to be able to fold up when not in use.

This is version number two and raises the feet by only 10mm.

I still need to make some pins to hold them up when not in use.

The top ready to be screwed onto the frame. (this was before I decided to add the wheels)

There will be 2 shelves, inside supports in place.

Thank you for looking

Cheers

Phil,

Looking good and solid! One tip for the nut apertures is to drill with a Forstner bit as you have and then chisel out to a D shape with the flat to locate the washer & nut. Makes it easier to insert the washer and nut, gives a flat face to clamp against and a bit more room for the spanner too.

Thanks very much Bob.

I will file that useful tip. the bolting together is actually a very strong join.

The first coat of Wooddoc 15 Marine is on.
Not sure of the drying time as it was overcast and cool yesterday afternoon and this morning cold and wet. (Autumn is here)

The wheels at the back.
If they get in the way – they are off!

The top screwed on, ready for the edging.

Looking good, Phil. Do you organise all your machines and bases so that they are all the same level? I try and do that as it helps manage long lengths of wood/support/access etc

Thanks Roger.

This stand for the lathe and some of the wheelie-bases are for stand alone machines like the scrollsaws.

The workbench and router table have adjustable feet and will sit next to the RAS to provide a nice long level area.
For the table saw I have a roller bearing thing that I made for long lengths.

The TP has extended pieces added on to help with the long pieces.

The edging done, and the Wooddoc applied.

Front and sides have some scrap white oak and the back some MDF (not enough oak)

Need to sort out the 2 shelves.

Phil, have you seen Chris Schwarz take on flip down castors?

Andy, thanks for the link.
I had seen something like it when surfing Utube long time ago.

The idea had crossed my mind, but then I only had 2 castors left, hence my 'creation'.

If I remove the castors from one of the storage boxes later on then this would certainly be a good option.

Shelves fitted.

The marketing department cleaned out their storeroom in December, so being a scavenger, decided that some of it could be used.

The bottom shelf is from customer returns, doors for cupboards with defects, trimmed to size and screwed down. It is MDF with white melamine.

The second shelf is 5mm MDF pressed with melamine. These are samples from the press plate supplier. One side with a wood grain and the other side with their logo.
I trimmed and joined two together with a contact adhesive to give me 10mm.
Need to ensure nothing heavy is stored on them.
