Shelf Life

Postby Rod » 06 Mar 2015, 22:43

After an absence of 12 months I got round to doing some woodwork albeit only replacing skirting boards to our lounge which I had to abandon last March.
I'd bought a couple of tubes of Evostick Decorators Sealant which when I tried to use just wouldn't gun out.
There's no "use by date" on them only batch numbers and both were unopened - I would have thought their shelf life would be longer than 12 months?
Anybody else experienced this?

I used a toolstation own brand one last week that had been first opened a year ago. it had a screw on nozzle cover which once removed allowed the caulk to flow just as it did when last used.

So yes, I'd have thought it should have been OK too.

The question to ask is 'How long had it been sitting on the shop's shelf?'

I mark up all my glues, stains and finished with the month and year of purchase. Once it gets too old (even a year for some stuff) I will bin it.
If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.

They do go off even in the tube. I had to buy more gripfill just yesterday because a tube I had wouldn't gun - admittedly it was 2 years old. I think the solvent in them evaporates slowly over time. It is faster if it has been opened and then put away.

Depends a lot on store conditions I believe. They dont like being frozen or too hot either.
Cheers !

They were kept indoors and other (older) similar Polycell products have worked fine.
In future I'll just buy the one and use it ASAP!
