Simple corner clamping jig

This can't be original but I've not made any before. Triggered by seeing some near infinitely expensive plastic moulding from Rutlands the other day and the need to clamp up my barrister bookcase prototype.

I made 4 in about 1/4hr. I think the pictures tell it all really.

A small chamfer on the 90 degree corner helps stop any glue squeeze out from attaching the jig to the work.

They are a pleasure to use and easily made from scrap.

Oh yes and take the time to set/check your TS cuts perfectly square. In the process I noticed everyone of my woodworking try-squares was in error on one face of other. I ended up machining it truly square on the milling machine and marking it "OK". The others will get the treatment on a round-2-it basis.

I saw the Rutlands ones too - this is just as good and made from the scrap bin (or mine at least will be !).

Yep the best solutions are also the simplest and I wouldn't mind betting that yours are probably more accurate then the ones from Rutland.

I quite expect the basic 90 degrees will be ok on the rutlands ones but the problem with any plastic moulding is that it needs a draft angle on the faces to get it out of the mould so the two faces that hold against the work might well have a slight angle on them which means a portion of the clamping force will go to distort the plastic and then the trouble can start.

I'm really please with these and should have made some ages ago. even after a perfect dry fit of parts most glue-ups turn stressful once the sticky stuff has been applied and these jigs can help reduce the degrees of freedom. Custom variants are easy enough to knock up even if you need a non right angle joint for a project.

Hi Bob - do you use the to hold everything square until you put on larger clamps?

Hi Stu
I did a dry fit with pipe clamps holding the dovetail joints where I wanted them (these were cut a tad too deep  ) and then fitted the corner jigs.
Then when I took it apart to apply glue, I left each corner jig in place with one clamp which made life even easier on re-assembly. I had a base and two ends firmly clamped at 90 degrees and then could add the top only having to check the depth of the DTs
These jigs avoid the need for any diagonal persuaders which for me always seem to get is the way of the other clamps.

Will we see this sort of jig in use in a local "pro" shop in future maybe?

I really like that! Nice ans simple and effective! What material did you make them from?

Thanks Erich
They are made from offcuts of MRMDF 18 mm thick but most other material would be fine.

I will make a note of that!

I had a diagonal persuader to make big steel frames, ''tis was two long bars with holes along at 150 pitch in one and slots in the other.

A nut and bolt type clamp held them together.

It would be easy to make a shorter one, drawing to follow soon, when I get back from the big smoke next week.

I try not to use such persuasion as I don't like to glue stress into a wooden structure as I feel it will bite back eventually.
