How to make Liquorice Allsorts

After my truly appalling gluing experience last night  , which has taken me quite some time today to fix (it was a close shave between a fix and the bandsaw) and in true penance for my sins, I've just made a few of these:

…which do appear at first glance to be said Liquorice sweeties. In fact they're special sweeties 'cos they stick to stuff like:

…G-cramps and sash cramps. 6mm ply, with a bit of SWIMBO's old black handbag and an 8mm rare earth magnet on the reverse side. Not my idea, but Chris Tribe's. Every workshop should have a bucketful - Rob

Nice idea but look more like dominoes to me? :)

I'm thinking fancy French chocolate biscuits.

Mmmmmm... biscuits.
Someone put the kettle on please. No sugar in mine.

But seriously though. Fantastic idea. Saves juggling, dropping and swearing.
Something else to go on the list. Ho hum.

mmmmm... biscuits.

fred

PS. Hungry yet? ;)

If it's leather you're after, speak to Froggy. He might have some left over from what he got from a charity shop whilst brandishing a pot of vaseline.

One of SWIMBO's old handbags donated to the cause. These are the best cramping blocks I've ever used as you don't have to worry about holding the things in place when gluing up.
Except in my case last night, I completely forgot to add one  and gave the sash cramp some juice - Rob

Can't imagine you did too much damage with your old man arms…

Here's the scenario. Big, meaty sash cramp pulling up a doweled joint. Combined length of 'oles was 38mm, dowel length was 40mm and there was no way in which the whole deal was ever go to come apart again, so I had to go together.
Big, big time spent this morning with a hot iron and lots of wet rag and then re-gluing the splinters  later on. The fix was done and it'll look OKish but I'm glad the piece is a Japanese style chest of drawers and will be going into the third bedroom. If you promise not to fall off your leather exec chair in Trimble Towers I'll post a few pics tomorrow - Rob

Haha, you know the rules Roberto, pics aplenty, be they good or bad! ;)

Cheers
Mark

PS I use a Herman Miller Aeron chair I'll have you know!

@Woodbloke:

BRILLIANT idea, thanks a lot for sharing. But that's now (yet another) "workshop & tools" maintenance job to add to my list.

Thanks, AES

I am going to have to make some of those. I'm incredibly cack-handed and spend all my time dropping clamp blocks. I did go as far as sticking them to the clamps with Blu-tac but I don't recommend it. Squish.

Ditto that Relaimer.

I've bought some rare earth magnets on ebay the other day, they're suprisingly cheap - 10 for £1.89 (4mm dia x 2mm thick).

Next thing to do is to visit a charity shop for some old leather. Hopefully it won't be a handbag! Fingers crossed they've got a small jacket. I definitely won't be doing what froggy did. But there again I don't need any vaseline so I'll be ok.

Cheers

Rob...

If I can't eat them I won't bother making them.
If I can eat them, I won't because I'm not supposed to ingest sugar! Har! Har!

Nice idea Rob. :D

A bit late on this one, but an 'addendum' to these clamping blocks. When using 6mm ply and thinnish leather from one of SWIMBO's old bags, there was a tendency for the magnet shape to telegraph through onto the work, so I've remade all mine (salvaged the magnets first) with 9mm ply and chopped up one of my old, really thick leather belts. Maybe a bit of belt n'braces, but there's now no way the shape of the magnet will show through on the finished work - Rob

I haven't got round to making any yet, but I'll go straight into a 9mm ply. I guess a 12mm ply should be okay too - depending on the weight ratio to the strength of the magnet. I see the magnets are no problem to source. 8-)

I travelled through Wilton last week and I forgot what a gem of a place it is. Mrs P and me are taking next Thursday off to visit Wilton House and have a spot of lunch and walk through the gardens. Weather looks good too. We're quite excited. 8-)

Wilton House - very nice to visit and of a reasonable manageable size to own - if I was landed gentry - as compared to some rambling estates.
Nice carpet shop nearby too.

PM me if you and SWIMBO would like to drop in for coffee on Thursday. We're only two minutes by Jag :D from Wilton House - Rob
