Thor Tapometer

I've had my little Thor tapometer for several years now and it's always been just the right sort of weight for small type persuading jobs, but the issue with it is that:

…both ends are hard nylon, which tends to damage work. What I was after was something the same weight but with a soft as well and a harder end. However, they're quite difficult to find, so I tried a little experiment:

…by cutting off around 3mm on the bandsaw and then using superglue to stick on a piece of thick leather. I've no idea how permanent it's going to be, but thus far, the leather shows no signs of coming off - Rob

I'm sure mines got rubber one end and nylon the other?
Are they no longer available?

They are, but not in the same weight - Rob

Looks like a good solution and when the leather does come off it's only a small re glue job.

Are you Froggy in disguise?!!

But seriously folks...
What's the weight and dimensions of the head of that hammer? If it's a leather end you prefer, you can get hammers with solid leather at one end and copper at the other. The lump of copper provides good weight and momentum when hitting something.

Thor make them:

But if that's too heavy, there's a "just leather" one:

And of course you'll be needing this:

It's this one with a 25mm, 250g head, which is ideal for what I want. A solid copper or rawhide head is still far too hard for tapping small delicate jobs together, but you don't seem to be able to get hold of a soft plastic head for this particular hammer. The leather gives just enough 'relief' so the job isn't damaged - Rob

Rob, I use the Thor ones in the engineering workshop but rely on a solid rubber headed one as a woodwork persuader. The white rubber head neither bruises or marks the wood. Mine is possibly a bit heavier than your 250g but can be used gently. Might suit you perhaps?

Like wise the same Bob, a much larger white faced rubber knockometer for the bigger tasks and the little Thor for smaller stuff…it also makes quite a nice plane adjusting hammer if the nylon face is used, but of course you won't know what I'm blathering on about   - Rob

Mines a 1 ¼" version but I made (rather crudely) a plane hammer from an old handle, 20mm brass tube with box wood core - it's very effective:
