Phil, simple answer is you can't attach a file to a post. This would require the forum server to host the file which we do not currently have the space nor bandwidth for. If you want to share a file with the forum you need to find a hosting service for example Dropbox which is already used here to host machine manuals.

You should find opening a Dropbox account very straightforward but if you need help give us a shout.

Andy, thanks.
I use Photobucket to store stuff that I share.
Looked at the Dropbox option, maybe try it out at a later stage.

The file is a 1 page PDF on blades, I will just make a JPG file.

Just as a general tip on converting files from a none supported format to one that tricks forum software packages into thinking they're pictures. If you open the file in Paint (ships free with Windows and is buried in Program files > accessories) you can use the save as function and save your file as either a jpg or a PNG file which most forum software packages will allow. And certainly picture hosting sites will.

That equally holds true for anything on your screen. Just grab the screen shot with the snipping tool, paste it into paint and then save it in the file format you need. Very useful set of free and already on your machine tools. In fact the snipping tool on its own allows a file to be saved as PNG, jpg, gif or html. So often you don't even need to get as far as paint.

A good tip, Rob. Same goes for Preview on the Mac.

I have loaded PDF's to the server where my website is hosted and can then be downloaded by clicking on a link in one of the menus.

I will try the same here for what I would like to 'attach'.

Here is example:-

O,well that was a stuff up. Servetown will not let me "hotlink" from here to a file on their server unless you upgrade your account to a premium (pricey) account.

Will see what photobucket allows - OK, does not load PDF's.

Not sure I want to go the dropbox route at this stage as it will just be another storage area to manage.
(will go and sulk)

Phil, perhaps you have something on your PC that will let you save a PDF as a .jpg? As mentioned above.
Here are some hints from Microsoft's support pages.

If you really want to turn the pdf into a jpg you could display the pdf at full screen on yr PC, do a screen grab then paste the screen grab into any image edit package and save with the title you want.

(display the pdf, then "print screen", then open a blank page/image in the image edit package and "ctrl+v")

Resolution wont be wonderful but it should be readable.

Phil, the forum dropbox is a bodge whereby the dropbox is administered my me privately and we publish the link on the forum for all to read. If you want to email me your content directly, I will set up a folder in your name for public access.

The same offer is open to all members - (in moderation please :D )

Ok, Paint will only open up files with the extension of
.bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .png

I use the Snipping tool for screen shots of files or whatever and then save to .jpg or .png or just paste the shot into a document. (also HardcopyPro)

This is fine if you have a one-pager only. I use this extensively when writing reports, inserting Excel sheets as pictures etc. (a picture is worth a 1,000 words!)

Bob, thanks for the offer, let me chew on this one for a bit. I can host on my website server (free hosting BUT with adverts) and then link in a post to a menu with the scroll saw patterns on the website.

Cheers
Phil
