1/4 inch 20 tpi studding - where to find ?

Postby chataigner » 26 Apr 2015, 15:42

I need some 1/4 inch 20 tpi studding, four pieces around 12 " (300mm) long. I can only find American offers on line, anyone know where I might find such a thing in the UK ?
Cheers !

1/4" x 20 tpi comes in two flavours American (unified thread) and British (Whitworth thread)

Maybe try 1/4" Whitworth or BSW in your search rather than the TPI

I should be readily available but I'm about to go and have a look on your behalf.

I'll report back

Thanks Bob, just to be sure, can you confirm that the whitw and UNF are mutually compatible ? If so, as you say, the whitw is the best choice. I didnt realise they could be interchanged.
Cheers !

They are not exactly the same but unless you have a precision application and both the nut and studding are precision made you are not likely to notice a difference. If push comes to shove then run a tap through the offending item.

The US one will be 1/4" UNC not UNF and should still be readily available. Do you know the spec of what you actually need? I'm guessing it could be for the veritas clamps in which case it is possibly UNC.

Exactly right, the Veritas clamps have 600mm studs which are fine for most things, but it would be good to have some shorter ones for small jobs, easier to manipulate.
