Camvac intereference with LW Radio

Postby Andyp » 09 Oct 2017, 10:46

Last year as part of the process of solving a problem with the remote control switching of my dust extractor I fitted one of these to suppress radio frequency interference, IIRC.

Image

Yesterday the missus got the right 'ump 'cos Desert Island Discs (radio 4 LW) was drowned out by interference which we later confirmed was the extractor.

I am not sure if this has just started happening or if this is just the first tie we have had LW radio and the extractor on at the same time.

Should that ferrite polo be suppressing that type of interference?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Andy, although the BBC iPlayer cannot be used overseas, their Radio iPlayer can.

Would that help? I'd think it would be much clearer than LW.

Malc, thanks I use the iPlayer Radio a lot.
A lack of suitable devices in the kitchen make this a little problematic at the moment. This could be easiliy solved of course with Christmas approaching, if there is no other option.

Bluetooth speaker is a non starter. As we would still like a radio in the kitchen and going to the iMAc or phone to change channel would be a PITA.

Internet radio is what I was thinking to buy LOML for Xmas I would want a mains powered one (not with a wall wart) and one that looks like a traditional upright portable radio not one of the very bulky square things I have seen everywhere. I'll have a browse later.

BTW the last Roberts radio I bought a year or so back was the only model they make without a wall wart and even their customer services people at the time thought everything was powered by 12v DC power adapters.

I've got Radio iPlayer on my phone.

I take my phone and speakers around the house, in the workshop when I'm down there or in the garage.

I spent and hour in the garage doing nothing listening to a play last month when I should have been washing the car!

Wall warts get round so many H&S design problems that nearly every manufacturer will use them.

So further supression of the Camvac is a non-starter?

I do not mind having another radio but a carting round a combination of gadgets will be too much trouble for me and even more so for the missus. I want to be able to just switch something on and press a button to find the right station.

Correct. Brush motors are the spawn of the devil. The filter I sent you is only effective at higher frequencies such as your control link.
My internet radio stores stations as presets and are recalled by button presses. Dead easy to use.
I think the model is something based on 102 or 104?
Bought as returns/over stock on eBay

Thanks Bob, I'll have a look out for something here. Roberts are expensive here but if I buy in the UK I'll have to buy another wall wart.

It takes a very standard 9v dc wall wart with a common dc plug size. When I was looking on ebay, some were being sold without wallwart and as a result, cheaper. One of these could well suit you with a French wallwart.
I can provide details of plug size if you need it as Roberts refused to tell me and just said buy our official charger. (Foxtrot Oscar!)

Long wave frequencies will crawl out along the wiring. It really is a difficult problem to suppress and the radio will have turned itself up to maximum gain to receive a weak signal only a few uV above noise.

A lost cause especially as every previous episode of desert island discs ever broadcast is available on iPlayer.

I have just remembered why I did not buy an internet radio last time. Broadcasting Rights.
Desert Island Discs is not the only thing we like to listen to on R4 LW.
TMS (cricket) is not broadcast on internet radio outside of the UK. Although England home matches have recently been available on YouTube. I do not think an internet radio will receive YouTube streams. I wait and see how the upcoming ashes will be broadcast.

Also the football on Radio 5 and more so now on Talksport. I can receive MW quite adequately here but again broadcasting rights do not allow commentaries to be streamed on the internet outside of the UK. Last night I watched the Wales ROI game on Freesat S4C muted as commentary was in Welsh and listened to the radio for the commentary.

So not sure what I will do now. Last Sunday was the first time ever that I have been in the workshop with vac running at the same time as the missus has been cooking lunch. So if I cook there is no problem and we get roasties rather than mash. :D
I do not think therefore I do not am.

This business about not streaming outside the UK...how do they technically manage this? Your IP address ? If so could you not use a UK proxy ? Or the TOR browser.

Geo-IP. Use a VPN, depending on your device.

I stream all the live football using a raspberry pi with kodi imstalled and run a VPN on it to mask my IP. Never looked into whether there’s a VPN for iPhone but perhaps a cheap android phone with VPN would solve all these issues...
